Kieron's Fighting Fit - GR

GLENN Roeder says Kieron Dyer's substitution in the 2-1 loss at Bolton Wanderers was made purely to keep the midfielder at the best performance level for the busy festive programme.

After firing the Magpies into an eighth-minute lead at the Reebok Stadium to record his second goal in four days, the former Ipswich man was withdrawn early in the second-half.

But having missed so much football over the last two seasons, the gaffer is determined not to overwork one of his prized assets.

He said: "Kieron is doing brilliantly at the moment. He scored again at Bolton and looked sharp again, just as we saw on Saturday against Spurs.

"But he's had a lot of games recently for someone who's been out of the game for 18 months.

"I don't want to keep going to the bottom of the well with him and putting him under more risk than need be.

"There are two more very important games coming up against Everton and Manchester United. Kieron will be fit for both of those and we just wanted to give him a chance to recover from the exertions of the last few days.

"He hasn't got any problems whatsoever, it's just a case of getting him fully match fit."

Roeder revealed that he also withdrew his other wide man, James Milner, as the England U21 starlet went into the Bolton game suffering from a heavy cold.

Shay Given and Nobby Solano (both groin) missed the game and it remains to be seen if either will recover in time for Saturday's trip to Everton. Roeder, meanwhile, also revealed that Celestine Babayaro damaged a hamstring in training prior to the 3-1 win over Spurs and could be sidelined for a couple of weeks.

Now I know we should never celebrate another injury but that is nothing but great news for the club

so he is going to lose the match,to keep them fit?

FFS,thats just plain stupid..

We would have lost anyway tbh. We needed some changes in an attempt to get back into the game. It didn't work but that's no surprise because Bolton were well on top by that point.

Hopefully Babayaro has played his last game for the club. His poor performances, ability to cry off with as little as a snapped fingernail and general lily livered-ness should see him never trouble the first XI again.

wouldn't be bothered by the baba news if we had someone better to step in (a la carr - nobby), but right now he's the best we've got and his absence doesn't help us win any points at the moment.  would rather have him than not under the circumstances.

Agreed. No matter what people say about him, he's still better than Huntington, Ramage & Edgar at full-back.
