The Premier League has accused Manchester City of breaking its financial rules following a four-year investigation.

The reigning champions have been referred to an independent commission over alleged breaches of a series of financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

City are accused by the Premier League of not providing accurate financial information, “in particular with respect to its revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs”.

The club are also accused of not fully disclosing managerial remuneration for a four-year period. These related to the 2009-10 to 2012-13 seasons, when Roberto Mancini was in charge.

They also stand accused of breaching Premier League rules on profit and sustainability in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18.

The Premier League has additionally alleged that City did not comply with UEFA’s regulations around club licensing and financial fair play in 2013-14 and between 2014-15 and 2017-18.

City were banned from European competitions for two years by UEFA for alleged breaches of its FFP regulations in February 2020. The sanction was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July of the same year, however.

A Premier League statement announcing the referrals said: “The proceedings before the commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private. Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the commission’s final award will be published on the Premier League’s website.

“This confirmation is made in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1. The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice.”

Last season, City won their sixth Premier League title since they were purchased by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.

They also won the Premier League title in the 2011-12, 2013-14, 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons.

The club are second in this season’s Premier League table, behind Arsenal.

Absolutely reeks of xenophobia. Had Newcastle also spent what Chelsea did in the January window, you can guarantee the Premier League would have been in uproar to stop it from happening, whether that means trying to get the government involved.

Probably a bit of truth in that.

Surely he's not going to instantly resign if this will take years to get sorted.

He quits, cites it being a massive distraction, moves to PSG (or similar) and he is merely a forgotten footnote in why City didn't win the league this season and is totally distanced from any ruling when it happens.

People need to stop going on about what about Chelsea. This has been a 4 year investigation about a period from 2009 to 2018 they aren’t going to do anything about Chelsea’s spending 2 weeks ago without proper investigation

Depends if he believes trophies will be deducted, I guess? His managerial title list will be a lot smaller and he might want to rectify that elsewhere whilst the Man City mess plays out. It’d be daft to stay and compete for more trophies if there’s a chance they’ll get taken off as well in the future.

Juve got titles stripped off them too!

Were the titles given to the runners up or just annulled?  Are we gonna get an open top bus parade through Liverpool with Wijnaldum etc waving the 2018/19 trophy about?

Gutting this like, something actually being done about corruption. Hope Boehly isn’t next, he’s such a top lad and definitely cares about people, cares too much if anything, and definitely hasn’t done anything shady since he came in

Talk of Mancini having a shadow contract where he ended up being paid (more) for 4 days work for a club in Abu Dhabi than by City.

This has been public for a while, aye.

Don’t know like, might be the final straw. Stories of bickering in the squad, lots of raised eyebrows and overt complaint about team selection (fine if you’re winning…), this might sound the death knell of his time there.
