Interesting this tactical development with Tino moving forward and infield.

Curious as to why it’s Tino and not Hall. Hall is the better footballer and Tino would more than hold his own in a temporary back 3 of him, Thiaw and Burn/Botman.

Eddie obvs has his reasons. Would be nice if one of the football experts to TV/video explained why they thought it was that way round.

Our RWs, Murphy and Elenga hug the touchline, creating space inside.

Gordon and Barnes on the left often move inside, creating space for Hall on the outside.

To be fair, Hall finds himself in that #10 area of the pitch quite often.

He's a great defender, but his attacking play is not good enough for Man City atm.

No doubt there'll be some specific stats that Man City like the look of, obviously pass completion being one of them, likely coupled with the number of progressive passes p/g. Everything else is arbitrary - it doesn't matter about his defensive stats as he'll have a much easier job in a tactically drilled side (not saying we aren't, but Pep's Man City are off the scale) and he'll not be required to shoot, cross or even assist goals.

There’s less defending to do at city but the defending is harder to do. At Newcastle we drop our line under pressure. We drop our line against good teams.

At City you’ll have to defend from the halfway line against Real Madrid. That’s what Tino is for.

I have a similar feeling to Isak re: Tino’s contract.  It should’ve been signed last year before he really established himself in the England setup and as a top defender in the league. When the top 6 realised we had stolen a march on them for Tino about 12-18 months ago.

The old leadership over leveraged on contract lengths with Isak and they left us in that position with Tino.  He’s still on ‘bought as a 21 year old coming from the champ’ money right? When a player seems content to be underpaid for a long period of time they are looking at moving.

We’ve not dealt with contracts well since Ashworth left.

I keep saying it.  Palmer signed  long deal with Chelsea.  But got a new contract (even longer) within 16 months of signing.  It’s to keep him sweet. When players improve their levels (Tonali, Hall, Tino) they need to be paid well even if they have 3-4 years left on their contracts.

I'm guessing it's because we have right footed right wingers that will mainly try to get on the outside of their fullback and cross, while we have right footed left wingers mainly trying to cut inside so Hall provides the width and crossing.

After the whole Isak saga I've mentally accepted that Tino and Tonali are likely to leave in the summer.

I really hope it's not the case, but we should be demanding massive fees for both players at least. Like others have said, Gvardiol went for £80m after impressing in the World Cup, so I'd expect Tino to command a similar fee in the summer,  especially if he's in the World Cup squad.

Tonali should also be valued at around £100m, so long as his recent dip in form doesn't continue.

Let’s get back to signing footballers that support Newcastle, it’s the only layer of protection we have against the top 4.

I can remember Gascoigne and Carroll pushing for moves elsewhere - it’s not a guarantee of ‘loyalty’.   Nor should it be - we likely release dozens of local kids every season.  It’s a two-way door.

I can see both going; don’t think we’d get anything like those numbers for them.  Tonali isn’t a £100m midfielder - and Livramento’s passport will inflate his fee a bit, but no-one is paying that for a RB with potential but some apparent weaknesses.

Tonali is a much better player than Enzo who was over a 100m.

Tino should command a higher premium than Gvardiol who city paid 90m euro for. We have our benchmarks it's weather we are competent at selling. (Not that I want to sell eitherl.

I don’t want to sell them either, but if we do I’d be amazed if we get £100m for Tonali.  Enzo wasn’t worth that fee either.  I don’t think Tonali has shown anything like the consistency to command that sort of fee.  Our midfield is an ongoing issue, yet we always think they’re worth megabucks.  Isak’s fee tells me they’re not.

Livramento is more arguable of course - and his passport will add about 20% to his value.

It really depends on how much City would offer. Tino is very ambitious and his injury record is also a concern.

Hall, on the other hand, is not for sale at any price.

They’re all for sale for a price - PSR dictates that.

I’m not worried about selling players - at least I know any money brought in will be spent.  I wouldn’t get overly attached to any player at the club.

Tino has to be unsellable and we need to give him a strong contract. It’s not just he’s a good RB that can still progress, it’s he’s also a good LB. It’s two positions covered of quality, so when you are assembling a squad, you technically only need 3 natural full backs so funds/wages can be tied up elsewhere.
