Gordon was first to the ball. Maybe he kicks it past the goalie to get a pen, but that doesn't matter. That allways gets given. Show me an example of that not being given? If you think that shouldn't be a pen, then you have a problem with the rules, not the decision.

Why are you being so argumentative about it? it’s fine to disagree. Let it go man. It’s irrelevant now. We are all glad it was given.

if that was given against us the same people would be up in arms. There was minimal contact much like the Jota one. The Jota one just looked worse coz he took a step before going down.

MotD commentator saying there was nothing in it when Grealish swung an elbow into Tonali

Infuriating that Grealish was allowed to go around flailing elbows and only got a yellow after the second or third incident.

Of course it was a pen. Even if the keeper didn't touch him it's a pen. You can't go launching yourself at the ball without winning it and forcing the attacking player to, at minimum, take evasive action.

Who cares if Gordon played for it? It's not relevant in a football conversation in 2024.

Pep admitted it was a pen. Lescott said it was a pen. It was a pen.

It really sounds like some of us can't enjoying anything at times.

Aye it was brushed off on Tnt. In fairness, I don't want players sent off for that but we were done for Schar doing fuck all first game..

No disrespect but that’s a ridiculous comment.  just because on a purely football sense I didn’t think it was a penalty doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy us getting it and scoring it

also everything you described there describes Jota v Pope and I’m certain you didn’t think that was a pen

It’s not about enjoyment it’s just how different some of us see the game.

If you did that at the Lockwood Cup you’d be laughed at [emoji38]

If a forward decides to knock the ball around a GK to score they’ve at least got to head in the direction of the ball to make an attempt to score. It was an art form in the 60’s (Greaves) onwards but sometime in the 00’/10s onwards it slowly become acceptable to run in to the GK’s arms or dangle your legs for contact and just throw your self to the ground.

Pleased we got it as had no confidence in AG one on one. Had every confidence in him taking the penalty.

I love it how just because man city didn't win, they've relegated our highlights to last on match of the day, even shite like everton v palace seen as more important.

Nothing to do with it. Footage it TNTs so not allowed to show that much of it.

I don't agree that he is initiating contact (physically/literally). It is what would probably be called a 55/45 ball to be won and evidently the 45 (Ederson) miscalculated it as being 50/50.

I think what is more pertinent, is whether the majority of players say 15 years ago go down here. To which the answer is no, in my opinion. As a defender, I don't see this as sufficient contact to go down (pre-VAR) but now (because of VAR and the modern "if there's contact go down cause VAR will validate it" game) it would be given a penalty and so by drawing any challenge in, as Gordon does so well, he is luring his prey into a false sense of security whereby they think it's a 50/50 and it isn't. That, is, somewhat, initiating contact (psychologically). Thus making it a game issue not a player issue.

And now I'm done being diplomatic but that's helped me pass 5mins where I simply cannot sleep.

Go back 20 years and a certain Mr Robert goes down every single time in that situation, mind.

Is that league only? From memory the only losses at home since February 1, 2022 are:

Liverpool x3

Arsenal

City

Milan (chasing a goal)

Dortmund

The Chris Wood Boxing Day Massacre

All competitions. You're correct with that list but he didn't join in February... (lost to Man City in the December prior).

But it was a penalty and has always been a penalty. You not thinking it was a pen, doesn't make it not a pen.

I get sometimes in football there are "could go either way" situations, like the Joelinton one.

This isn't that. I'm surprised anyone that watches football thinks it's not a penalty.

Also @LFEE this is PL football. It's not mates having a kick about. We can all talk holistically about how we'd like to see football. It's irrelevant, it's a a million miles from the game we want. If you say "I wish it wasn't a penalty", no issues, in fact I'd agree.

We’ve a couple of speed merchants. Thankfully their names look absent this year

Also let's say Gordon had jumped over the keeper and the ball had now ran into a tight angle and he missed, you are saying that's fair?

So what's going to happen next week? Goalkeepers are going to throw themselves at everything knowing that the striker is now massively disadvantaged.

95% of players do exactly what Gordon did and rightly so.

Again, I'm not saying that I don't understand your frustration with the modern game but that's not really the discussion. The question is whether it was a penalty. It was.

just because you saying it’s a penalty doesn’t mean it is. I guarantee if it was the other way around you’d be absolutely fuming…again like the Jota one. Everything you have said about this one could be said about the Jota one and I’ll bet you are adamant that wasn’t a  penalty. Jota was running at speed and his foot got clipped by Pope the only difference is Jota went down in instalments

I promise you I wouldn't.

I can also promise you that I'm a hypocritical cunt. ;)

In all seriousness, I can't even remember the Jota one.

Just watched it again. AG realises his touch is too wide and heavy and then dives. Not a penalty for me. Will die on that hill happy [emoji38]

While fair enough on finding someone who thinks it wasn't a pen, I don't agree with Shearer on many things.

Fair enough, you won't be swayed.

I thought it was a pen.

I think for some pens are things that couldn't be avoided and I think players now are smart enough to engineer a penalty collision and some a great at it (Gordon is!)

For them it somehow reduces the authentic nature of it being a pen, but really its still a pen.

Honestly if that was Haaland getting that yesterday this place would be in absolute outrage.

Btw Tino’s v Barca wasn’t a pen either

It’s a penalty; despite the fact that Gordon’s touch was pony. There’s contact and he’s impeded. Not sure why MOTD didn’t analyse Walker clattering into Big Jo shortly after, absolutely no intention of going for the ball.

In a perfect world those aren't given as pens. In the real VAR world, they're always given as pens. If a keeper comes charging out and gets none of the ball and makes any contact on a striker running full speed, it's an easy decision for VAR. It's a rare area where VAR are consistent. If the ref hadn't given it, I'm sure VAR would've intervened. Hard to think of a similar post-VAR example where that's not given. Anyone?

We've been victims of those before and will be again. Imagine if Pope had charged out like that and got none of the ball and had clearly connected with Haaland. I'm sure some in the media would be pointing the finger at him. The narrative would be reckless keeper, late, gave the ref no choice etc.

The Joelinton one should be the main talking point.
