Free-kicks, Corners & Throw-ins

I was reading this article by a Motivational guru: -

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/6222777.stm

"Look at the dwell time - free-kicks, corners, throw-ins. Bolton have done a lot of work on this. When they win a throw-in they don't wait for the opposition to get organised. Far better to exploit the opposition's disorganisation as quickly as possible."

I think this has been a failing of Newcastle's for a long time. More often than not we seem to lose the ball from throw-ins. The person waiting to throw the ball always seems to wait until everyone is marked before they think about throwing the ball. Also, do we have nobody who can throw the ball a decent distance? Our usual tactic seems to be to throw the ball to the nearest man who will lump it upfield.

We are atrocious at times on these. Great examples have come in the games against Chelsea. Most of our freekicks and throw-ins in attacking positions result in a good scoring chance down the other end almost less than 10 seconds later. Ridiculous.

Or we play the ball into the box when our own players aren't ready... These are some of those footballing basics that we seem to lack at times, very frustrating.

Its been that way for a long time with the Toon, there seems to be no system at all for throw-ins, its not very offten we gain any kind of advantage at all, in fact most of the time we just put ourselves under pressure.

Do we have anyone at the club able to do long throws? cannot remember the last time we had a throw-in wide of the box and just hurled it in there.

Infuriates me every single time i see Emre standing over a corner or an attacking free-kick instead of Nobby.

Depends what sides it's on. And Nobby's a defender now, so if they broke quickly and he was over in the corner...

Emre is a poor corner taker, on the whole, he just doesn't beat the first man too often. When he does though, they are peaches.

Agree to some extent about the corners - Emre should probably take them (or Milner?). But in regards to the free-kicks, i don't think it matters what side he's on. Nobby's a set-piece specialist, or atleast used to be so not all of the talent will have gone, and he is still capable of whipping an absolutely delightful ball into the box. See Sibierski's header v Manu.

Nobby should take our free-kicks...

Aye, Nobby should take the kicks like, or even Milner. Didn't he do them at Leeds?

Not entirely sure. The truth about Milner is though, despite him not scoring many goals for us, he's got a heck of a peg on him and he's taken the odd special free-kick for us when the ball's been fairly central. See the Ventspils game earlier in the season, he rattled the bar with an absolute peach of a free-kick in that game.

Steve Watson used to lob it a fair whack like from throw ins. Since him can't remember anyone really. Barton rings a bell but I think my mind is just thinking along the lines of right back like Watson.
