Looking for a January bargain

The January transfer window opened on Monday and the scramble for cheap reinforcements is well under way.

Managers from Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson down will be looking to strengthen their squads for the season's run-in.

But for every Micah Richards or Peter Crouch, there will be a dozen players who will hope to persuade prospective buyers they can do a job for them at a fraction of the cost.

Here, we look at some of the men who could represent the bargains at the January sales.

HENRIK LARSSON

Ferguson staged a coup to land the 35-year-old former Celtic and Barcelona striker on a short-term deal and will hope the Swede can bring greater firepower to his side's push for the Premiership title.

SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS

Almost a forgotten man at Stamford Bridge. There has been plenty of interest in £21million Wright-Phillips, who is interesting former club Manchester City and Portsmouth.

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER

Larsson's arrival and the form of Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo have left the 33-year-old Norwegian on the sidelines amid speculation he could be up for grabs. Former team-mate and Sunderland boss Roy Keane is thought to be monitoring the situation.

JAMES BEATTIE

David Moyes has dismissed talk of £6million signing Beattie leaving Everton, but it would be no surprise if another Premiership club offered him the chance to resurrect his career.

NIGEL REO-COKER

There will be plenty of takers for the West Ham skipper if the repercussions from his bust-up with the club's fans continue as Alan Curbishley attempts to steady the ship at Upton Park.

WES BROWN

Struggling for games at Manchester United, the defender once compared with Bobby Moore could be a target for managers looking for both quality and experience.

LUCAS NEILL

Blackburn's Australian full-back is out of contract in the summer and has been trailed by several clubs, including Liverpool and Newcastle.

JEREMIE ALIADIERE

The Frenchman has had only fleeting chances at Arsenal, but has had loan spells at Celtic, West Ham and Wolves and is a target for Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate.

FREDDY EASTWOOD

The Southend star served notice of his ability by dumping Manchester United out of the Carling Cup and with his club languishing at the foot of the Coca-Cola Championship table, they may be prepared to cash in.

GAIZKA MENDIETA

Surplus to requirements at Middlesbrough, the Spanish international who once cost Lazio £28.9million is available and could relish a challenge away from Teesside.

MASSIMO MACCARONE

Middlesbrough's record signing at £8.15million, Maccarone has been unable to command a regular place despite his heroics in Europe last season. Seems destined for a return to Italy.

GARETH BALE

Southampton will demand a sizeable fee for their 17-year-old Welsh international full-back, and Newcastle are watching with interest.

GILES BARNES

Derby's highly-rated attacking midfielder is being trailed by a series of Premiership clubs, including Newcastle, although that is bound to push up his price tag.

DANNY MURPHY

The 29-year-old Tottenham midfielder has been used sparingly this season, but could still make an impact in top-flight games.

DAVID DUNN

Once touted as a regular for the senior England team, injuries have blighted Dunn in recent seasons and Birmingham, who paid Blackburn £5.5million for him in July 2003, have hinted he could be allowed to leave.

DAVID NUGENT

Nugent has attracted attention from a series of Premiership clubs with Middlesbrough having been repeatedly linked with a move for the Preston frontman.

BEN ALNWICK

Alnwick, 20 on Monday, started the season as Sunderland's number one, but is expected to join Tottenham in a £1million move next month to challenge England's Paul Robinson.

JONNY EVANS

Manchester United's highly-rated defender has excelled at Royal Antwerp and will make a loan move to Sunderland next week, where manager Roy Keane is plotting a late Coca-Cola Championship promotion push.
