Onyewu's debut...

So I've been thinking to myself, would giving Gooch his debut at Fulham be a mistake? As the only signing of the January transfer window, there's an awful lot of pressure on him to turn in quality performances right out of the gate to justify the fact that he's the only player Roeder managed to land. If he has a bad first game, a lot of people will seize on it as proof of Roeder's failure in the window. Plus, Onyewu knows that he has very few chances to land a contract this summer so he'll be worried about what a bad start might do for his future. Top that off with the usual nerves that I'm sure will accompany his EPL debut for us, and it cranks up a whole heaping load of pressure on his shoulders for his first game.

As of right now, he's an unknown factor to most of the clubs in the EPL. Nobody really knows his strengths and weaknesses, and they'll have to test him out to find where he's vulnerable, which should give him a slight cushion. Not that anyone'll shy off of him, but they won't know exactly how sharp his tackles are, if he can get turned easily, etc. But Fulham have McBride, Bocanegra, and Dempsey, all of whom know Onyewu's playing style (a lot better than we do right now) and I'm sure have shared any potential vulnerabilities with their teammates. If anyone in the EPL have the edge of knowing Gooch's weak points right now, it would be Fulham.

So is it really a good tactical decision to have him make his debut, with all the pressure that comes with it, against the only team with players that knows his playing style better than his teammates do?

Just a thought.

You have some good points, and i've thought of some of them myself, and if he doesn't start it wouldn't surprise me, but i hope he does.

He looks like someone who can cope mentally with pressure, for me its a case of can he handle the skill level, and Fulham would be a good test for that.

we need his ariel ability on set peices and balls into the box, espescially with Mcbride lining up for fulham.  And i imagine if coleman was any kind of manager, he, having looked at gooch over the summer, and having to play us, would know his weaknesses already. so i don't think the other yanks will be much of an influence.

intresting

but you can flip it round though

Onyewu has faced McBride in hundreds of training sessions and marking his fellow country men tomorrow would not be foreign to him a dabut tomorrow would not concern me at all

We do need his height and aerial ability, no question. Hopefully he'll do fine if he gets started. Mainly I'm concerned that he's only had a day or two to train with the rest of the team. We've seen the drawbacks of playing with an unsettled back 4, and I can't imagine that they'll have built up any sort of understanding together yet. I'm just worried about putting out a defense that's not ready to play together yet.

Its going to be the same regardless of when he makes his debut with us.

He seems mentally very tough, and Id say on the arrogant side of confident from his early interviews, Im eagerly awaiting watching him.

The press seem to be playing on the fact he might move someone else at the end of the season aswell.

Comments on the BBC saying he refused to talk about where he will be after the end of the season, and ITV quoting him saying "Its always been a dream to play in the premiership and starting off at a club like Newcastle is great."

He is very ambitious and driven by the looks of things, even if he is to go somewhere else at seasons end he will always be motivated to play well for us.

agree its a concern

however with Milner having 4 assists and 2 goals in two games and Damien Duff return to the side and Dyer and Martins threatning teams through the middle i feel we will have too much attackingly for Fulham tomorrow thats the postive.

as much as our back four is a concern and especially after them coming off their worst performance of the season in a lose to a relagation side i don't see them being too much of a big concern to our unsettled back 4 and dabuton Onyewu.

i feel the Fulham game tomorrow has come at a great time and we need to make the most of that by getting the three points

Lets never play him so we never have a chance to knock his confidence.

In fact, he is more likely to lose confidence if not played.

Fact is, he either is or isn't mentally adapted to play for Newcastle, and the only way we can find out is to play him. If he isn't mentally adapted, then its good that we can get rid after 12 games, although I'm hoping that's not the case.

Play him.

For a start he wouldn't want fellow Americans to have one over him. Either way he will have a bit of nerves. If he debuts at St James he will have alot more supporters with big expectations of him, nerves will probably kick in a bit more at home. Plus having fellow Americans around before the game who he will probably chat with may make him more relaxed.

Agree with the general feeling, he has to start sometime so let's make it this weekend. I think his knowledge of Fulham's yanks will be more useful than their knowledge of him. Just seems like it's more of an advantage to a defender to know how an attacker likes to play (for some reason!)

Also, I'm going so I want to see him  :)

i agree with this.  when better to start than against forwards whose tendencies you already know?    the real question is does/can he understand the lingo? :)

Fulham are pretty much shit. As good a place for a debut as any. If it were away to Man Utd that would be another story.

Fulham don't concede many goals at home though (9 goals in 12 games) so they are a danger still.........hope Gooch stops us all from having panic attacks when we have corners given against us

None of the US Mens National Team like playing against Gooch in training.  They've each said it before, repeatedly.  Play him!

That's laughably tenuous, no suprise from the media in this country though...

Guest nufc 4 life

i am going so would like him to play but in an interview he says

"I hope to get some time on Saturday and take it from there,'' Onyewu said.

"I understand that over the past couple of years, defense has been a question at Newcastle,'' Onyewu said. "Hopefully, I will be able to perform well and get that opportunity to show we can turn it around.''

like how hw says WE can turn it around possible commitment lol, but with to regards if he will start or not he says he hope for some time so maybe he is doubting he will start
