Roe out on spy mission

Feb 19 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Glenn Roeder took advantage of Newcastle United's free weekend to run the rule over one of his top summer transfer targets, Curtis Davies, at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

And The Chronicle can reveal it is the second time the United boss has watched the West Bromwich Albion skipper and captain in the past couple of weeks.

Roeder and his No 2 Nigel Pearson were at Molineux at the end of January and saw Davies star in West Brom's 3-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory over their Black Country rivals Wolves.

And Roeder was at The Riverside on Saturday and saw Davies grappling with Yakubu before finally being sent off in West Brom's excellent 2-2 draw with their Premiership opponents.

Pearson, of course, knows all about the 6ft 2in 21-year-old former Luton Town trainee from his time at The Hawthorns, and this would be an advantage if Roeder follows up his interest with a bid for the England Under-21 international (pictured right) in the close season.

Roeder told me today: "Yes, I was at The Riverside on Saturday. We play Middlesbrough at St James' Park a week on Saturday and this was a good opportunity for me to have a look at them.

"In addition, it also gave me the chance to run the rule over a couple of players at West Brom we have shown an interest in in the past."

Roeder did not mention Davies by name because it is not his policy to talk about players at other clubs, but obviously he was having another look at the central defender.

However, it's a fair bet that when Davies was red-carded for the first time in his career in the closing minutes Roeder was already on his way up the A19.

But he will be happy that West Brom still held out for that 2-2 draw as this gives Middlesbrough what looks like being a difficult replay at The Hawthorns a week tomorrow - four days before Gareth Southgate brings his side to St James' Park.

It's the same with Sunday's Premiership opponents Wigan Athletic, who have a re-arranged Premiership game with Watford at Vicarage Road on Wednesday night after the game was washed out at the back end of the year.

Roeder will have his southern scout Ted Pearce, one of the best readers of a match in the game, at Watford on United's behalf on Wednesday night.

Before the trip to the JJB Stadium, United have their home leg against Zulte-Waregem in the UEFA Cup at St James' on Thursday night, when one of the biggest problems will be attracting a crowd with that two-goal advantage and the fact that the match is going out live on Channel Five.

He would be a great signing but he is not going to be easy to get, I think a lot will depend on wether we have European football or not next season. There will be many clubs after him and to get them to sell their Captain will not come cheap.

His price will go up if West Brom get promoted

I think Titus probably will leave if we sign both of them, Gooch, Taylor, Davies, Huntington and Edgar is enough.

You forgot to mention Ramage who i think is worse than Bramble

I prefer if we get rid of him instead of Titus

Also i hope that WBA stay in the Championship .This way it would be easy to sign Davies

I only mentioned Bramble in responce to someone elses post, I left Ramage out of my centre back list though :)

If we get Davies and Gooch, I would imagine that the four first team cb will be Davies, Gooch, Taylor and Bramble.

Huntington and Edgar will continue their development in the reserves, the odd match or on loan.

Ramage and Moore will hopefully leave.

Davies, Gooch, Taylor and Bramble + Edgar, Huntington

We will end up having too many central defenders and I see no point putting Taylor on the bench and Bramble as 4th central defender.

IF we sign Gooch permanently in the summer, then Gooch + Taylor + Bramble are enough. The 4th slot should be occupied by Huntington or Edgar. Both Taylor and Gooch are adequate enough for a midtable team aspiring for top 6.

Free up the money to concentrate on other areas more in dire need of reinforcement, such as left back who can deliver results immediately, and a young bright right back with the potential of replacing Solano eventually.

Guest Geordiesned

I don't know why so many people are wanking off over Curtis Davis tbh. He hasn't impressed me when he's come up against anyone decent and was caught out badly against Boro on Saturday.
