Luque's set for Euro recallFeb 22 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Albert Luque has been given a surprise call-up for United's UEFA Cup second-leg clash with Zulte-Waregem at St James' Park tonight.

Glenn Roeder's plans to field the same side which beat Zulte 3-1 in Belgium last Thursday had to be abandoned when Antoine Sibierski failed a fitness test today on a hamstring injury.

Roeder could have switched Kieron Dyer to play alongside Oba Martins, a role the England international has done so well in this season, but the United boss is likely to hand Luque his first start since the goalless draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany at the end of November.

Luque will not need reminding that he was so poor that night in Germany that Roeder was forced to haul him off after an hour and replace him with Martins.

And with young Andy Carroll champing at the bit on the bench tonight, the Spanish striker - he will be 29 early next month - knows that the same fate will probably happen to him again unless he pulls out all the stops.

After seeing their side score three times in Belgium, United fans have every right to expect goals tonight - and this is the perfect opportunity for Luque to add to the goal he scored against Lillestrom at St James' Park in the first game in Europe this season, and also the winner he grabbed against Palermo in Sicily.

This is United's 12th game in Europe this season - they are still unbeaten - and it will be the eighth time that Luque has been involved in either the InterToto or the UEFA Cup and, as they say, the ball is very much in his court.

Meanwhile, Celestine Babayaro will play and then head to London for his brother's funeral tomorrow, and I hope the Nigerian international gets a good reception from the United fans tonight at what is a very sad time for him and his family.

Babayaro will return to Tyneside later tomorrow and train on Saturday before leaving for Sunday's game with Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium.

United knew they were always going to have a hard job attracting a big crowd at St James' Park after winning 3-1 in the first leg in Belgium, and the fact the game is again being beamed out live on Channel Five doesn't help.

But when the box office opened today they had sold 25,000 tickets for tonight's game, which is a great effort by their fans, and United are hoping to push this up to as near 30,000 as possible with fans turning up on the night.

It is unclear at this time if he was given a start in celebration of Newcastle Onlines Albert Luque thread reaching 100 pages!

Excellent, will be good to see Luque and Martins upfront together.

Shame for the Sibbers losing one of his only chances to get closer to 10 goals for the season (even if he thinks he can get 15-20).

Huge chance that will no doubt be squandered again by Luque. Of course he might well score a couple, be man of the match but still be dropped for the wigan game. Its a chance all the same.

Bar the goal he cant play too much worse than Sibbers did last week.. or is that tempting fate?

I hope he scores, just for the sake of proving every cunt that slates him wrong.

I hope he scores tbh.  Just so I can take the piss out of all the know-nowt spanners that claim it as vindication.

Aye scoring against the European powerhouses Waregem will prove those doubters wrong for sure!

oh, so he has to score 5, assist in 3 and throw in a couple of defensive tackles to prove you wrong, just because he got his only start against a shit team?

You said if he scores he'll silence his critics, one goal against a shite team proves fuck all.

Just breaking into a canter on occasion and looking vaguely interested would be a start.  The goals and assists can come later.

If Luque scored a hat-trick tonight it wouldn't prove anything really as far as i'm concerned. He's still done f*** all against anyone decent he's came up against. He's a lazy waster.

Palermo at home aren't decent then?

The ball all but hit him in the face, milners cross was so good. Jason Lee would have tucked that chance away.

So Luque cant win tonight then? either way he is gonna get slated. Heres a thought lets remove all of Shearers goals from playing against crap opposition cos 'anyone could score against that pile of crap'. People on here should take there head out of their arses and realise whats good for the team, which is what Luque playing tonight is. Whether it gives him a boost or puts him in the shop window its better that he plays.

Afterall how many people on here are glad that the 'waste of space pile of w*** red manc ginger t***' never played for the club again, oh yeah thats right he did......................

Ahem.

Nicky Butt had shown throughout his entire Man Utd and England career what he was capable of.

Luque has shown precisely fuck all.

That's it like, Luque has shown what he can do in Spain but that doesn't prove he can do it in the Premiership.

"Give me one more chance, lads."

Shit opposition or not, it'd be great to see him get a goal or 2 tonight and put in a good performance.
