Teacher on sex charges

By Vince Gledhill, The Evening Chronicle

A teacher has been charged with sex offences against a schoolgirl. Married music teacher Steven Whitfield has been suspended from his job at a North East high school after the claims came to light.

It is understood the alleged offences involved a pupil at the school and were over a period of two years.

The 47-year-old has been accused of abusing his position of trust by inciting a female sexual act and of taking indecent photographs of a child.

Whitfield is charged with eight sex offences.

Whitfield, of Grosvenor Place, North Shields, appeared in court wearing a suit and a red tie to face the charges.

When he made a brief appearance at Bedlington Law Courts he asked for the case to be adjourned while he sought legal representation and the case was adjourned until next month.

Mr Whitfield has been suspended from work at the Northumberland school since June last year.

He has also been separately charged with assault over an alleged domestic incident, understood to be connected with the alleged sex offences.

A Northumberland County Council spokeswoman confirmed that Mr Whitfield is suspended.

She added: "Steven Whitfield is a teacher of music.

"The local authority takes allegations of this nature very seriously and has assisted the police with their investigations."

A spokeswoman for the school said: "We can confirm that this member of staff has been suspended without prejudice since June last year when we were made aware of the allegations against him.

"The school is continuing to help the police with their inquiries."

He faces two charges of abusing a position of trust with a female aged between 13 and 17.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between March 2004 and June 2006.

He has also been charged with two offences of abusing a position of trust by inciting a female sexual act on the same dates and four of taking an indecent photographs of a child.

All of the charges relate to the same girl.

It happened at my school, he taught me music  :o
