ok, i try to defrag and i tells me chkdsk f/ is scheduled to run. so how do i get it to run  blueconfused.gif

Sometimes it needs to run outside the operating system to do a full scan.....

yeah done that, but it doesn't run chkdsk. how do u get into dos when re-booting?

If you go into command prompt, and type in "chkdsk /f /r" (without quotes), it should ask you if you want to run on restart. Press Y, then restart your computer.

 

The scan should then run.

ok, scan runs on boot up, but it says ntfs something or other, then says...cannot open volume for direct access. help anyone!

NTFS is the file structure on the disk (like FAT)

 

 

the error message is an XP "feature" - see the MS article on how to fix it  (maybe)

This is caused by either anti virus or s.m.a.r.t configuration on your motherboard. Basically you're trying to scan your drive when it's using a running process. You'll have to go into your bios and have a look at your settings.

 

Updating to xp sp2 can help
