Has Titus Bramble turned the corner?

Dare I jinx things by even uttering these words but...

The lad has undoubtfully been our best defender since he's come back from injury, and dare I say one of or more consistent field players period.

It's been said ad nausem that he "could be class if he puts his head on straight." Well, if he's ever had his head on straight during his career, it's right now.

So, how do you see it?

Has Bramble turned the corner on the way to being, if not a world beater, at least a productive player for us?

...

Or his he just waiting for the right moment to spring the big one?

In before Northern Monkey.

He turned the corner about 2 years ago, but he only has to make 1 mistake and all his good work in the rest of the season is forgotten by most (if it was ever acknowledged in the first place).

He was better than Taylor last night.

Thought it was a bit easy for him though, their forwards often let the ball come to them so Titus took advantage and nipped in with some interceptions.

I think i prefer it when he hoofs it tbh, i hate when he decides to play 'clever' ball across the back 4 with both their strikers in between his intended recipient.

He still scares me when he has time to make a decision.

He has been our best defender recently but you make name for yourself with constancy

If he has played like that all season i will say that he has turned the corner but right now he just played some good games for us

If he continues like that and keeps that form until the end of the season i think he will deserve his new contract

Because of the stigma attached to Bramble all it takes is one mistake that leads to a goal and all his recent good work will be forgotten. Its really frustrating watching Bramble because you know at times he has all the attributes of a top class central defender. He is good at most things that you would expect of a defender but there have been to many mistakes in his career.

Recently maybe not as many as we would make out but as I said because of his history of bad mistakes people will jump on him 1st oppourtunity!

I'm honestly stunned by how positive the reaction is.

I expected "OMGLOLKNEEJERKYOUKNOWNOHTINGABOUTFOOTBALLSCREWOFF"

Guess this just shows how much Titus has been contributing lately.

He's always been excellent in the last few months of the season.

However, for some reason, at the start of each new season, he's overweight and playing appallingly.

He really needs to slow down during his holidays. Usually he just surrounds himself with his Ipswich friends, and messes around, inevitably getting on the front pages.

Realistically, if he is ever going to be good for us all season, he needs to get some new friends.

Titus is certainly playing better now than he ever has for us. I think as a centre half you only really reach your peak round about 28-30ish. I recently read that Gerrard rates Carragher as one of the best centre halfs in Europe. I rate him this well too but I can't remeber hearing much about him four years ago i.e. when he was Titus's age.

I think he is worthy of a new contract based on recent performances and I think he will become a great player in a few years when he does eventually reach his peak.

was gonna bring the contract thing up as another reason for his performances - he'll know that NO-ONE else will pay him the proposterous wages he's been on at NUFC (when you consider the performance levels we've received in return) so doesn't anyone think he's being spurred on by a lack of comfort zone, i.e. the uncertaintly of a new contract?

thus if we're gonna extend his contract (and roeder has said/intimated it's on the cards) then surely offering him one year deals might bring the best out in him?

Playing well at the moment which deserves credit, but the reality is we've carried him for far too long now. He should have been flogged years ago.

Aye,his recent peformence has been outstanding,if he keeps his peformence up like this i want us to sign a new contract with him..

Then again,i am just afraid he pull's the big one on us,something like this :

90+3 mins : Horror for Newcastle as Titus Bramble puts the ball in his own net,2-0 for AZ

Lets just hope he keeps his concentraion up and keeps his good peformence..

Titus is doing what he has always done, gets some form going and the confidence creeps in, makes one mistake it all goes out the window, he gets injured and comes back again as the "worst defender ever!" then the cycle starts again.

anyway i suppose there's an argument that for the amount of mistakes he actually makes we could do with keeping him and spend money concentrating on getting good full backs, which is causing us (as a team) more problems than titus bramble himself ever did

a non-mistake making CB alone does not make a defence if he's utterly hamstrung by the lack of a specialist FB on both sides...

Put it down to over-confidence,a couple of good games on the trot and Bramble forgets the countless mistakes he's been at fault for,and believes then he is the black Franco Baresi.Titus would be a far better player if he knew his limitations and stuck to  them.If he did that over a sustained period of time, then give him a new contract.

'overweight' is harsh. The guy is barell-chested

nice to see him getting praise from someone other than myself in this thread, keep up the good work Titus!

Thought he played well last night, and you have to say he's looked good since his most recent comeback. Still haven't seen anything other than highlights of him playing alongside Gooch though.

For their first goal there wasn't enough pressure when they cleared the ball down the middle of the park, and my first thought was 'where the hell was Bramble', which on later reflection I realised should have been 'where the hell was one of Bramble, Butt, Parker or Taylor'. I wonder if we've now reached the stage where when anything goes wrong people's first thought is to look at the pitch and think either

a) Bramble wasn't anywhere near that - he was out of position

b) Bramble was right there - must have been his fault

Just saying it's getting a little hard to be objective about him after so much sustained criticism.

Bramble stayed with his marker for the first goal. His marker went to the near post. Shota was Taylor's.

EDIT: It was Carr's fault though, IMO. He was slow getting back, and when he did, he was too central. The crosser had acres of space to fire in a dangerous ball.
