This hole we are in: How do we get out? Can we get out?

As far as I'm concerned, we are in a big massive hole, one we dug ourselves, and while football is a fickle old game where the line between failure and success is a thin one, I can't see a way out for us at the moment.

Scenarios

1 - The club uses all the new TV money to offset debts, helping the finances.

Result, lack of new signings sees a fall in season ticket sales and other merchandise, not helping the finances or the team as poor results continue.

2 - The club uses some of the new TV money to offset debts and to buy some new players.

Result, the finances stay the same, and so do results on the pitch.

3 - The club uses all of the TV money to buy new players, taking the club further into the red.

Result, manager wastes a lot of it on flops and poor results continue.

4 - The club uses all of the TV money to buy new players, taking the club further into the red.

Result, but the manager buys well and the team qualify for the CL.

1,2 & 3 wouldn't make a difference to things, in fact number 3 would spell disaster, where as number 4, well, who here has any hopes of that happening?

So how do we get out of this? We could finance debt by selling some of our stars but that won't solve any onfield problems and on the stands, will just drive more fans away, so even that is another counter productive option.

Are we really hoping a man credited with three relegations will turn things around for us? Or if not Roeder, an unproven, inexperienced former number 9 who will need lots of money anyway... not to mention lots of patience?

I'm not concerned about how we arrived at this sorry state of affairs, we all know why and we've all had our say, that is in the past, what does concern me is how do we get out of it.

For me there is only two real options open to us:

1 - Refrain from spending for a few years to pay off debts, reduce wage bill, get finances in order, which means accepting a few years of mid-table mediocrity.

2 - Sell the club to wealthy investors willing to take on the debt and invest into the club.

And neither will happen, because the board can't allow a mass non renewal which more unproductive years will bring where as they've already had an opportunity to sell, but chose not to and don't look likely to do entertain the idea in the near future.

We could of course appoint a top manager and hope that man can get this shower to perform to the max of their ability and reach CL heights so those finances can be worked on, but even then, that manager would probably get sacked at the first sign of trouble anyway, meaning any success wil come down a crashing.

There are more concerns too, where as we could once outspend our rivals, next year the Evertons and Spurs will be flush with cash, so will Villa and even the likes of Bolton, clubs who are well run. Suddenly the already stiff competition gets even more competitive. Then  there is the risk of losing the likes of Martins due to our inability to compete and falling attendances (a big risk factor for the club). And if we do sack Roeder, which manager in his right mind would want and join Newcastle? A club with financial troubles, a shit squad and apathetic fans, a club riddled with the knee-jerk disease that sees top managers get sacked for finishing 5th, and shit managers get handed big warchests for finishing 14th.

If we were an unattractive option to candidates post-Souness, god knows how unattractive we will be post-Roeder, I don't even think Freddy's blue eyed boy will want the job.

Me cynical? You bet.

Me worried? Hell yes.

You?

The board? The honourable thing to do would be to step down and let someone else have a go, someone with the backup (money) and skills (brains) to not only turn the club around, but deliver success which this current board will never be able to achieve, 10 years of mismanagement and total and utter failure tells you that, or should do.

Sell to Belgravia, I said at the time I'd be happy to have them buy us out just to get the debt from around our neck.

They pulled out just before we found out Newcastle wouldn't be getting a super casino. I think they were privvy to some information and decided that without the super casino it wasn't such a great investment.... but I'm just speculating.

I'm not so sure about that, don't they have an 6 month agreement that Freddie Shepherd can't buy the club without them giving the ok?

That suggests the fat man didn't want to sell and instead wants to try and get Halls shares on the cheap.

Excerpt from Kevin Keegan interview in today's Independent:

He takes a sip of coffee, not that he needs the caffeine hit to fuel his indignation. "Only two Premiership teams, Manchester United and Chelsea, can win the title next year, let alone this year. I took Newcastle up [to the Premier League, in 1993] and we played our way to third, second and second.

"That will never happen again in your lifetime. Clubs bring on good young players, then the big clubs buy them and knock your house back down again.

"Reading will lose their best player at the end of this season if [steve] Sidwell doesn't sign. And Shaun Wright-Phillips, who was an outstanding player for City, hardly plays a game now at Chelsea. With their new investment, Liverpool will cement their place in the top four and make it even harder for other clubs to break into the so-called elite. Only Everton have got into the top four in the past four years. It's out of reach for almost everyone [except United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool]." A sigh. "I think that's a pity."

He's right like.  I really miss Keegan being in football.  Heard on the news yesterday that he's planning on running one of his "soccer circus" things in Newcastle.  Good news if you've got kids.

How sad has the world become if it can disillusion even Kevin Keegan.

This was actually the most depressing thing I've read in a while. Especially because it's true.

No satisfaction when smacked in the face with a hard dose of realism.  All the more harder to take when you know it's almost certainly 100% accurate.

The club needs to start living within its means for a couple of years at least and concentrate on getting into the Uefa Cup and hopefully doing well in the League and FA Cups. That's the way forward.

The club is in a downward spiral......the manager has run out of ideas.......the season tickets need renewing...........the toon is despondent...........the fans are miserable........the answer is blindingly obvious:  we need a TROPHY SIGNING!!!

I can see it now:  hordes of charva kids & the unemployed descending on SJP, the new strips flying off the shelves & ready for printing;  a few fat retarded care in the community patients for Sky to interview; someone saying "We're gannu win the league noo like" on national TV;  a beaming chairman shaking hands with our new signing proudly saying something uplifting like "Only Geordies know how to put on a welcome like this";  and Roeland Rat scuttling about in the background trying to make out signing a seventh striker was all his idea.

Yes, bring back those great days Freddy!  It worked before, it can work again!  Don't listen to these oafs talking about buying defenders!  WE NEED A TROPHY SIGNING!  Come on Fatso, where's your cheque book?   :icon_biggrin:

First, I don't think the hole is this deep. So I'd like to suggest scenario 5.

5. Relatively little is spent on new signings, but free from European football and an injury crisis the league campaign goes well ensuring decent gates. A settled squad turns out to be more use than trophy signings, Martins, Ameobi and Owen terrorise premiership defences and a couple of well researched defensive reinforcements plus more encouraging performances from Taylor, Edgar and Huntingdon ensure that losing at home to Sheffield is a thing of the past.

Still not enough to unseat the top four from their lofty positions, but more than enough to see us next year occupying the slots Bolton, Reading and Everton and Spurs are currently fighting over.

With the club doing well again someone finally convinces the Chairman to sell...
