Bernard: United dream is dashed

Mar 24 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Olivier Bernard will be allowed to slip quietly out of Newcastle United at the end of the season.

The French defender was given a one season contract by United on September 1 but he will not be given another one.

And the 27-year-old will leave without getting anywhere near a first team game in his second spell at St James' Park.

That is bound to be a huge disappointment for Bernard, who signed on transfer deadline day on August 31 last year.

For he said at the time: "Leaving Newcastle United was the biggest mistake I have ever made.

"There hasn't been a morning I have not woken up and wished I was back at St James' Park.

"This is my club. They gave me my chance and I cannot wait to play for them again."

Bernard (pic-tured) must be rueing the fact that talks about his new contract in the summer of 2005 broke down and this led to him leaving St James' Park.

And he must be regretting that after an unsuccessful spell with Southampton, he decided to go to Rangers where he came under manager Paul le Guen.

For his fellow Frenchman ordered him to lose weight and this had a detrimental effect in the opinion of the managerial and coaching staff at United.

They felt that after duly shedding the pounds, Bernard also lost the pace and power that is so vital in the Premiership.

It was Paul Montgomery, working as a scout for Sir Bobby Robson, who brought Bernard from Lyon to St James' Park in 1999 and he became a firm favourite with the supporters.

Ironically, it was also Montgomery who, in his role as European scout for Rangers, persuaded Bernard to make that ill-fated move to Ibrox.

And just as ironic is the fact that Montgomery, who worked with Glenn Roeder at West Ham, has now returned to United as a scout and has been given the job of finding a new left-back.

Another dumb shit who couldn't recognize a good thing when he had it and listened to a bunch of dumber shits.

No sympathy at all.

Goodbye to a player who had less positional sense than Titus.  Another fans favourite based on getting stuck in despite being unable to understand the left back role.

More suited to midfield imo but a shocker of a singing for Roeder.

La la laaa laaaaa!

;)

Better than babayaro, at least he cared. Bernard would play with broken legs if he could, Baba needs his brother to die to even play a game of football these days.

Better than Babayaro isnt an excuse and even that is debatable as at least Babayaro could drag his ass onto the pitch and the fact that Bernard has struggled in the reserves.

He was one of my favourite players first time around. Shame it's come to this and you have to wonder if he has any sort of future anywhere if he can't make an impact with us, especially considering what injury problems we've had.

But you know there is a medical reason for it with Bernard, Babayaro is a cunt, end of.

Neither are good enough, and why the board allowed us to go into the season with that as our options in a vital position, we'll never know.

Actually we do, Freddy wants a new jet.

Thats it and there should be no room for sentiment about someone who was allegedly good once.  The fact is the club had no options and it is likely to be the same this summer.  Dont believe that top players are lining up to come here.

No sentiment from this end other than it would of been nice to have the old Bernard back as Babayaro is that shite and permanently injured.

Both need releasing in the summer, and two new LB's brought in.

We don't have to go out and spend much, players like Nicky Shorey would be a huge step up for us, always playing (hardly ever misses a game, all the way through his career), done well and can cope at this level, cost Reading peanuts (less than £100k), and would be the best left back we've had here in a decade. Its just a shame he signed a new contract at the end of 2006 as it was up this summer like Sidwell. But am sure a £2-3m bid might tempt them to sell, no doubt he'll have a release clause in there somewhere. Also mid 20's, perfect age, still the best to come, there might not be a huge jump in quality to his peak, but enough to make him a target imo.

This is just one example of a non name player who interests me right now, but he'd jump at the chance to join Newcastle.

I think you are right, that is the type of player to look at, not always going abroad or for players dropping out of other teams.  Someone on the way up.   It will be nice just to have a proper full back for a change.

He'd quietly do the job, get on with it, and enjoy his time playing at the top level and trying to improve. He'd want to play for us, he wants to play for Reading in the EPL, this club would be a dream for him imo.

Although typical British player he's really solid going forward, excellent crosser from what i've seen on MOTD & SS1 this season (although admittedly not much, people do hold him in high regards)

A little on him from SSN's

Just should never have let him go in the first place.

He wouldn't sign a new contract because he's a greedy b******, no sympathy whatsoever.

Shepherd must have loved it when he walked in the door in September. Can just picture him, cigar in mouth, feet on desk, wry smile. "So how much did you want again..£25,000? Here's £4k, take it or leave it".

If we already doubted his fitness, why the fuck did we give him a whole year's contract FFS?

Why not pay him week by week till he got selected, then give a contract?

THIS FUCKING CLUB :wullie:

Reading have picked up loads of bargains, their whole squad probably cost less than Luque and Boumsong!

Just shows its possible to shop in the lower leagues and get players good enough for the EPL.

Am not saying Shorey is a worldbeater, or the same for Sidwell, Dave Kitson or Leroy Lita, but they are good enough to stay in the EPL, and for a grand total of £1.5m (£1m on Lita) these players would be doing a canny job here at the Toon. Backup to squad, filling in the gaps, its what we need to do, or at least get a manager who knows the talent below us, GR simply doesn't have a fuking clue, Barnes & Bale are the only two players he even knows of playing lower league football, while Nicky MAynard & Billy Jones are just waiting to be snapped up by EPL clubs.

Edit: Billy Sharp, mini Owen clone, good backup for sicknote, £1.5m, be Owens summer wages.
