Connection problem - had enough

Reet i've had enough of this its pissed me off long enough, someone must be able to help!

I can access websites fine, evidently as i'm on this. I've never been on a website that says i'm not connected. But when I try to connect to an external server, it won't let me. I'm on a network here at home, sharing with 3 other PCs. Its not wireless, i'm plugged into the wall and all other 3 computers can get on things like MSN, even coming out of the same plug so its blatently my computer. Here are some examples:

ITunes Music Store:

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/7420/itunes0pc.jpg

MSN:

http://img321.imageshack.us/img321/6451/msn3wl.jpg

Last FM:

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/9076/lastfm1gd.jpg

I'm not behind a firewall either incidentally.

What browser are you using ?

I ask because internet explorer (even if you're not using it as a browser) can cause all those problems.

try going to add-remove programs/add-remove windows components, on the internet explorer checkbox de-select then select the tickbox then hit next. This should repair explorer. Give it a go

Ally, I'm not an expert like Lazlo, but I can recommend something that can perhaps be a part of solution.

Why not try a different browser? This one is actually faster and more effective than Firefox. And it's important for me, as I'm in Serbia, and on a dial-up connection.

http://www.maxthon.com/

Maxthon loads pages quicker than Firefox, looks much like IE, but offers tab browsing and more security, as it's not part of the Windows, unlike Explorer. Also contains popup blocker and all sorts of stuff.

EDIT:I forgot to add, Maxthon is also free.

sounds like you have a security setting somewhere that is stopping you

check Norton if you have it and Windows security centre - the settings may be sent at VERY HIGH Security

I've got Norton and its expired, but predictably it won't let me re-subscribe because it can't find an internet connection!

1 more suggestion

You can access the internet ok but any 3rd part programs that generate a script to access the net would appear to be blocked. This might suggest that the firewall in norton is still active.

I would try to un-install norton completely and any other firewall software you have installed and try just with windows firewall activated. The new itunes and new msn won't appear in nortons trusted programs list if you haven't updated it for a while and will block it by default.

I know norton can go a bit funny if your licence has expired even if you have it disabled

Right managed to get rid of all things Norton, my PC now has no virus protection, woopdeoo!

Still can't access anything though, exactly the same problems are occuring. Help!

Internet explorer works fine, apart from things like Hotmail, and the University server. Can get on the website, just as soon as I sign in it loses connection.

How do I show running processes or a hijack log?

Ok here goes. first disable system resore (you can turn it back on after)

Also make sure hidden files and folders can be seen by going start>control panel>folder options>view.  Make sure the tickbox is checked.

Next run hijack this again and have it fix the following entries by putting a check in the box next to the relevent processes:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.topfivesearch.com/sidesearch.asp

Shut your computer down and start it again in safe mode (hold f8) post bios check.

Delete: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\sp.exe

Delete: C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network (folder)

Delete: C:\Program Files\websearch

Shut down and boot into windows normally

Please consider upgrading windows to service pack 2. I know it's a big download but it will cause you less problems and it is also completely reversible should you have problems. You can download it here: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html even if your copy is not original.

Fingers xx'ed but please post another hijack this log after you've done all that. Hopefully that should get it though

Cheers mate will keep you informed.

I've not read the full thread but you havn't got the sites you can't access in the restricted area have you ? Some spyware and viruses can add sites to this section so it might have happened. If you go to internet options / Security / Restricted Sites and then click the sites button make sure the sites you can't access aren't in there.
