Sky News reporting 11 Man U fans are in hospital tonight. Some have apparently been stabbed.

Why are the Manc's innocent?? Both are tossers.

Erm. Did you see the way the Riot Police were all in the Man U end, just watching the Roma fans lobbing all sorts over? That's provocation. If the police had been on both sides, hell, just ROMA's side, this would have been a lot less likely to happen. It was a typical "Get the English, they're the real trouble" mentality from the Italians. More likely, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a deliberate move on the Police's part not to make matters worse and have a running battle between the Police and Roma fans. Sort of "let them (Mancs) have it, we can then use the usual English are trouble story".

Can't believe you're blaming the Man U fans. At all. That guy with the chair, I'd have been doing that if I was there. You're being attacked by the very people put there to protect you, cause they're too shit scared to take on their own people. Fucking scum, the cops, the Roma fans, the whole lot.

Thought it was standard policy for the Italian plod to face the away fans, thus unable to see the shower of missiles being thrown from behind them? Very convenient...

A friend of mine went over for this game and I'm yet to find out whether he was involved at all. The fans were all warned before they went re: the high probability of trouble, but like ourselves - why the hell shouldn't we/they go and support our respective teams in a so-called civilised country? And when is something going to be done about the Italian police?!

I agree with that sentiment, but I think there comes a time when a point has to be made. English fans are clearly victimised over there, not just by other fans, but by people that should be protecting us. It's nuts. They need chipped out, it's the only way, in my opinion, as that's the time these teams will REALLY look at their fans. When the cash isn't rolling in from Europe.

It needs to be done by UEFA or the likes though, Italian politics is too weak at the moment.

Will you disown your friend if he describes people who treat him badly using the c word, because your human development dictated that the c word is forbidden?

I'm more concerned with whether he's okay at the moment actually, Stevie, than with a pathetic internet argument.

I'm disgusted I have to feel inhibited in 2007, because a THIRTY THREE year old woman finds certain words offensive.  I hope the cunts ok too.

Marko - I don't go to many away games but my family does and the only serious trouble I've heard of was in Belgrade our first time (several fans ambushed by local Serbs weilding clubs and crow bars). Also when we played Roma I believe a Newcastle supporter lost their eye from a missile. No trouble in Juve and after all of the hype Palermo was failry quiet - I rekon there are two explanations for this 1. Geordies are more polite than other English folk and 2. We are hard as fucking nails... it defo both TBH.

Guest justin99.

It's amazing that they still seem to put the main focus on the foreign travelling fans. This type of thing seems to happen at any italian league game, especially derbies.

I thought the Italian FA said big changes were to be made to prevent this type of thing happening ala Sicily.

marko, there's been trouble every time we play in Italy, albeit on varying scales. I was in Roma and the home fans were launching missiles at us there from inside the ground. Quite ironic considering no Newcastle fan was allowed in the stadium with any coins or cigarette lighters which were taken off you by riot police on the way in. A few fans (3 or 4 from memory) were stabbed/slashed in central Rome before and after the match and the local youths constantly made throat slitting gestures to you. You really had to watch your back.

I've also watched us play in Milan and Turin and there were incidents at both those matches, mostly within the stadiums under the watchful eye of the bent coppers. Against Juventus we had to take shelter underneath the overhang of the tier to avoid missiles, which included bottles of piss, raining down on us. A little reported story I know about is from years ago when Man Utd played Juve. A Man U fan lost his eye after being struck by ball bearing thrown from the upper tier. That story was related to me first hand by my cousin's husband (a Manc) who was stood right next to the guy. There were also a few skirmishes outside the stadium in Turin and the police were very heavy handed. We were given a police escort back to our hotel in the Alps (all coaches were given separate escorts to wherever they were heading) about 1 hours drive away. They forced into out hotel. Thankfully they handn't reckoned for the Geordie need for beer and as soon as they fucked off just about everyone snuck out into the towns only night club round the corner! :D

In Milan, it has to be said that I never felt in any danger outside the ground and didn't see any trouble. The only annoyance was being followed around by groups of police wherever you went. They were just waiting for any opportunity to wade in. Also, they banned the sale of alcohol in the city centre. Thankfully, if you walked far enough out of the city centre a few places were having lock ins and still serving. Inside the ground was different though with a few flairs coming down on us and the police getting a bit handy with the batons as you squeezed through the small entrance. You could actually see the fear in the eyes of some of the young coppers as a crush ensued on the way in, the crush having been caused by them opening up the gates and allowing everyone still outside to pile in! I even went into the stadium with a couple of AC Milan fans with a huge flag on a pole sneaking in next to me. I've still got my ticket that was never checked!

I didn't go to Palermo but heard similar stories from mates who did and West Ham certainly had a lot of bother over there.

So basically, wherever you play in Italy, you have to watch your back and don't expect any help from the local constabulary. That said, great trips all 3 and don't think it's just the Italisn police that get a bit handy with their batons. I was on the wrong end of one in Marseille whilst leaving the ground and witnessed quite a few people getting the treatment in Barcelona.

The friendliest coppers? Switzerland undoubtedly (when we played Basel). They were happy to have their photos taken with Toon fans and were a canny bunch.
