seriously, what the fuck has he done, apart from inspire confidence?

he inherited the spine of a good team, he's had the luxury of signing anyone he wants, and more importantly he hasn't suffered for bad buys, or even had to sell them (Duff, SWP), he needs no special skill to persuade anybody to sign, the young buy's he has made have been found out (Mikel), he came out of the Cole saga smelling of roses, somehow making Arsenal the villain, he's had no real competition - the first time a team has got their act together in the Prem he's been found wanting, the team itself needs no tactical direction, these players are good enough to know how to play to a system and grind out results, the first time he's had to adapt to injuries he's moanded like a cunt and been found wanting again, the first time he's had to accomodate players that don't fit the's found wanting

All he is a confidence and self belief mechanism for a self sufficient team with no money limits, with along with having the negative aspects of being an arrogant cock and ingracious in defeat. You could just aswell give Big Ron that job, he'd do just aswell.

I agree to an extent. He is a very good man manager and motivator, but in the latter stages of the Champions League he has been found wanting tactically on several occasions.

Generally agree.

Also think the way he's supposedly 'made' Joe Cole is blown out of proportion.

Don't get me wrong, Joe Cole has become a very good and very effective wideman under Mourinho, but whats happened to the free spirit that was going to win England the World Cup? What happened to the hugely skillfull youngster who looked like being one of the few if not the only English players who can beat a man with a peice of individual brilliance like the Brazilians can?

All Mourinho's done as I say is turn him into another effective run of the mill winger like Robben or Duff. When ability wise he's on another planet to either.

And all the best managers do at several times in their careers. Ferguson, Capello, Hitzfeld, Benitez, could go on, have all also been found wanting in the CL at certain times, and all with brilliant teams. Which is often over looked when people focus on a manager and want to run him down on his own.

Agree with Brewer on Cole like.

Can't believe some are actually agreeing with Vic. An argument could be made if all he has achieved was achieved at Chelsea. It wasn't therefore this argument is shit. How did he take a team like Porto, lead them to a UEFA Cup triumph in one season then the next, lead them to the Champions League title, beating along the way clubs like Manyoo and Chelsea. Clubs like Chelsea, whom at the time was managed by a rated Claudio Ranieri, a club that had limitless money to spend, just like they do today. He's a brilliant manager. It also shows in the fact that Lampard, Cole (Joe), Terry and Drogba have developed as players.

Agree with all of that, bar the Cole bit. :D

He got the job on the back of a fluky Champions League run with Porto. A last minute winner over Man Utd (courtesy of a Howard f*ck-up) and then Deportivo and Monaco.

All round he's a good manager, but nothing great. His defensive record is the most impressive thing, but you get judged on results, not on goals conceded.

Swapping Gallas for Cole was a huge mistake. Not only is Gallas a brilliant defender but he was swapping a centre back for a left back. He never replaced Gallas, and as a result he had to play a right back and a central midfielder in central defence at Anfield this season and lost the title race because of a couple of injuries to key defenders. It's his own fault that Chelsea began the season without adequate cover at the back.

Fact is Chelsea are effective but they don't play great football. Many people talk about 'grinding out results' but I think there are also those games where you need the craft and guile to find an extra gear. Man Utd are both effective and play good football and that's what makes them the better team this season.

I rate Cole higher than I do Robben (the lazy tit). He's much more effective and efficient now. Not a ball-hogger who can produce a moment of brilliance once every 5 or so games, but someone who can be depended on to contribute to their attacking system (a system which works very well albeit is pretty ugly).

As the old saying goes, you make your own luck.

I agree he may be overrated like, and that was the risk with taking the easy (in my opinion) job at Chelsea, the success was always going to be doubted. I don't hold it against him for not winning the CL with them though, you're up against the other best managers in the world at the late stages. To be found "wanting" is no shame, as your opponent was probably found wanting the year before.

I doubt Capello, Hitzfeld or Benitez would fail to even reach the Champions League final if they had three years with the Chelsea squad and an unlimited transfer budget.

Ifs and buts, and regardless of the amount Chelsea have spent, it's not always been on good players. Those other managers have bought shite players too, you know, they just didn't have a minumum of £25m to bid for them.

Lampard obviously wasn't brilliant enough to be the FA Writer's Player of the Year, and runner-up for the European Player of the Year as well as runner-up for the World Player of the Year while Ranieri was coaching him. Tbh, there should be no doubt that Mourinho is a great manager. The fact is, it's harder to win a title than it is to win a cup; it's about consistency and he's developed a ruthless consistency at Chelsea. He's won the title twice and contrary to popular opinion, the title race for this season isn't over. And Chelsea are also still in the Champions League, btw.

PS. Where did I mention Cech?

Lampard is one of the most over rated players (particularly by himself) I've ever encountered. He is decent, handy but he's also shit. And a complete prick.
