Nobby targets Champions League

From the chronicle

Nobby Solano flew south today - convinced that Newcastle United have finally got their bearings and are heading in the right direction.

And the 32-year-old Peruvian international goes to Fratton Park for tomorrow's game with Portsmouth determined that United will take their Easter form with them.

But whether United can add to the four points they picked up at Sheffield United and the goalless draw with Arsenal - thanks to Solano's amazing double goal-line save - on a ground where they last won in 1990-91 is open to conjecture.

But an upbeat Solano, who is set to agree an extension to his St James' Park contract, said today: "This season isn't finished yet. We have five games left to play, and who knows where we can finish?

"Maybe we can finish seventh or eighth?

"The only thing we need to concentrate on is taking as many points as we can."

Portsmouth, of course, beat Manchester United in front of their ecstatic fans on Saturday night, only to have the embarrassment of losing at Watford on Monday lunch-time to leave them five points ahead of United.

Solano added: "We know Portsmouth will be a difficult team.

"They have done very well and they are in comfortable position.

"Everyone thought they might be fighting relegation, but they're safe now."

Looking ahead to next season, Solano believes consistency is the key to a revival in United's fortunes.

He admits Newcastle have given away too many points this season, especially to teams struggling in the bottom half of the Premiership.

He added: "We're looking forward with a little bit of confidence now to next season, when we have to try to qualify for the Champions League.

"At the moment we're going in the right direction, but we need to be more consistent.

"That's the difference between ourselves and teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United - they're consistent and never lose to the bottom teams.

"That's what I mean when I talk about consistency. We need to learn from the top teams. We have to learn never to give easy points away.

"But we are a good team with good players.

"We're not using injuries as an excuse, but hopefully - with a bit of luck - we can have all our players fit from the beginning right to the end of the season.

"It's very important, especially when you play in so many competitions.

"We've hung on quite well this season, and now we're looking forward to next term."

I heard Roeder interviewed on metro/century just before the Arsenal game and one sentence he said was literally "No excuses but we have had a lot of injuries this season." What a fucking joke!

Nobby clearly harking back to the old days when champions league was possible. it's going to take a lot more than one summer to change us from a rightly mid-table side to a champions league outift- even if we do get a new manager.  I've been to (I think) 12 games this season and not seen a decent perfomance- two wins but neither were convincing! I can't think of one game I've seen (and I think I've seen pretty much all of them at least on football first and all those on live and the ones i've been to) where we've played like a team capable of qualifying for the champions league- we're not going to be able to perform to that standard week in week out next term!

Agreed, there has been a few games where we came away with more points than we deserved.

We are going nowhere with that carboard cut out as manager.
