Disk error

Does anyone know what is wrong with a hard-drive when it says "A disk read error has occured"?

Is the hard-drive totally buggered or what?  blueconfused.gif

When the PC is booting I presume? It's pretty common (I've had it a few times). It generally it means your windows install is fucked and needs reinstalling.

Aye when it is booting, sorry I should have said that in the first place!

 

Thanks for the advice, so basically its Windows and I will have to reinstall it, therefore losing all my stuff on the hard-disk? Any idea as to why it buggers up like that, is it the virus I have on there do you think?

nah, you can reinstall without deleting everything, just make sure you don't tell the setup to reformat the hard disk.

 

If you don't want to take that risk, you could make backups beforehand, copying important files to a USB pendrive or DVD-R using a bootable linux CD (knoppix).

Yup I already tried the reinstalling without deleting but it didn't help unfortunately. The actual laptop itself is knackered as well so wasn't helping matters keep on going wrong!
