Toon Four Set Spot Kick Record

By Craig Hope

NEWCASTLE United have scored six times from the penalty spot this season - four different players having been successful from 12 yards.

Shola Ameobi, Oba Martins, Nobby Solano and Emre have all stepped up to keep their nerve and net for the Magpies.

And in doing so the quartet set a new club record for the number of penalty scorers in one season since entering the Premiership in 1993, beating the previous highest of three in 2000/01 - Alan Shearer, Kieron Dyer and Solano on target that year.

In fact, you have to go back to 1958/59 to find the last time the black and whites had four different penalty scorers in a single campaign.

Arthur Bottom, Ivor Allchurch, George Eastham and Jackie Bell were the spot kick kings for Charlie Mitten's men as United finished 11th in the English top flight.

When Alan Shearer hung up his boots last summer, the position of penalty taker was up for grabs.

First to step up was Shola Ameobi, scoring at home to West Brom in a 3-0 victory just one game after Big Al bowed out following his knee injury in the 4-1 win at Sunderland.

And it was Shola who maintained the mantle at the beginning of this campaign, firing his last goal in black and white colours during the 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton in October.

The 25-year-old frontman eventually succumbed to a longstanding hip problem in November and the decision was taken to undergo surgery.

With Shola sidelined, the responsibility fell on Nigerian striker Oba Martins against Reading, his penalty helping the Geordies to a 3-2 win over Steve Coppell's men in December.

Martins then blazed over the crossbar at Everton in late December, and so it was decided that Nobby Solano would be the Magpies' man from 12 yards.

The Peruvian netted twice from the spot, first against West Ham in the 2-2 draw at Gallowgate in January, and then slotting home the winner in the 2-1 success over Liverpool at a rain-soaked St.James' Park in February.

Martins then resumed his role in the 3-1 first leg UEFA Cup win against SV Zulte Waregem in the very next game, before Emre became our fourth scorer at Portsmouth last month.

And if Michael Owen bags his first of the season from the penalty spot at Watford on Sunday, he would help set a post war record of five scorers in a season.

Here, nufc.co.uk takes a look at our Premiership penalty scorers ...

There is nothing else to report on and lets face it unless it has anything to do with the new appointment do any of us actually give a shite.

I expect a couple of stories during the week to forcast that Allardyce is either having second thoughts, is thinking of becoming a manager somewhere else or is legally not allowed to be our manager, before finally getting the news on Monday that he is our new manager.

Oh the suspense
