Newcastle On Casino Shortlist

THE eight-strong shortlist for Britain's first Las Vegas-style super-casino has been announced - and Newcastle features on it.

The UK Casino Advisory Panel said on Wednesday that it has finalised a provisional shortlist of 39 proposals from local authorities seeking a casino license following an extensive review.

The provisional shortlist has eight competing proposals for the regional and 31 for the large and small casinos.

The eight are from Blackpool, Brent, Cardiff, Glasgow, Greenwich, Manchester, Newcastle (NUFC) and Sheffield. Only one site will eventually get the go-ahead for a super-casino with unlimited jackpots.

A further 16 licences for small and large casinos - with jackpot limits of £4,000 will also be granted.

The large and small casino proposals have been submitted by Bath & NE Somerset, Bournemouth, Brighton, Canterbury, Chelmsford, Dartford, Dudley, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lindsey, Great Yarmouth, Hastings, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Luton, Mansfield, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Newham, N E Lincs, Peterborough, Restormel, Scarborough, Sefton, Solihull, Southampton, South Tyneside, Swansea, Thurrock, Torbay and Wolverhampton.

In January, the Casino Advisory Panel sought casino license proposals from local authorities, which resulted in 68 formal proposals. However, one proposal was later withdrawn, leaving 67 to be considered.

Chairman Stephen Crow said: "I know that our decisions will cause disappointment to some, not least to authorities who had looked to their casino proposal as a means of alleviating severe problems of deprivation or even improving social conditions and meeting the need for economic regeneration.

"But the competition has been very strong, so it is inevitable that some proposals, good enough though they may be in themselves, have to yield more before more powerfully justified cases."

The Casino Advisory Panel's final decision is expected to be handed to ministers in December.

General chat? Not a very "short" shortlist is it? Why narrow it down when theres that many places on it?

We need it like we need a kick in the face from Graeme Souness. I pray to fuck we don't get it. The town centre enough of shit-hole as it is. There's more to a city than bars, stag nights, and pissheads knocking the puke out of each other.

I never understand the negative view people of 'stag and hen economies'. They bring in a lot of money and jobs which is much needed imo.

I agree that the after effects of a good session need to be looked at, but maybe a central viewpoint (i.e the casino) would bring a different type of stag party into town?

I'm all for it personally, anyhtiong unique for the Toon has to be a good thing.

I'm sorry, mate, but I lived in the heart of the city for three years and it got to the point where I couldn't step out the house--even in the early evening--without some prick giving me abuse or finding that the car had been wrecked by some cunt. Until we move away from this Party Capital bullshit we'll just be a joke. In comparison to other, really great cities, it's pathetic. You walk to work in the morning and you have to dodge the piles of puke leading from the metro station. Newcastle shouldn't just be a place where the Scots, Irish, and Cockneys can come, abuse, and fuck off home and leave us to clear up. At the minute that's what's happening, and we're whoring the city to the rest of the country co's we're desperate for the cash.

There's still scope for there to be a casino though isn't there?  Just not the thoopercathino.  Although the fact that it's no longer thooper would probably end any interest MGM might have had in it.

Good news, the city is a cesspit to start with what with all those students and hen/stag parties, charvers getting into bars and causing trouble etc, we already have a Casino and Nobles, people are skint man, and these things just create debt and trouble. Let the Mancs have it. It would only end up a nightclub here anyway after a few years, just like the Sage opera thing, which is dying on it's arse. The Chronicle said those yellow Quayside buses have had over half a million through the doors, I pass them everyday and they are always empty. They think this place is the new Paris, Amsterdam or something with all those pavement caffes, boulevards and arty farty shite. We don't have the temprement for those things. Spend money on the run down areas, improve transport and city centre congestion, create more accessible things of interest for the masses, not exclusive things for the few. Wankers.

Yup I guess we could still push forward with a 'fair to middling' casino but we will have lost the old MGM deposit. Disappointing, but at least Terry Mac and the lads will not have the added distractions I guess.
