ennyoueffsea
Hi all, Can anyone help out with some advice please. Me partner has just started having major problems just getting the pc to start up. In the past couple of days, it is very slow in starting and then gets to the same stage where it just drops off and restarts, and then gets to the same stage again, then restarts again, and again etc. She is using XP SP2 and this has just started happening. When loading, it reaches to where it loads AOL Companion where it then crashes, yet has had this program for years without any previous bother. She has on one occasion managed to get in quick via Task Manager and stop AOL Companion, and been able to run HiJackThis and the log is below. However, she's unable to get online at this stage. Any help would be really appreciated. Mick
nothing too important, just music, games and my temper. im currently installing 59 updates to get my comp back up to speed. You might not get it back up to speed by updating as the registry will have entries from the software that you've removed. You might have to reload the operating system now because windows will be looking for software while booting and it could slow it down a lot. You might end up getting lots of messages when you do get into windows telling you that it couldn’t find certain things. I don’t know if you tried anything before deleting things but windows gives an option to use the last known working configuration if you hit problems, sometimes it will sort problems out that way. If you have problems now your best bet might be to re-install XP after formatting your drive, you've got nothing to lose now by trying what you're doing. Mick
If you have annoying messages try and get some registry cleaner software, that might sort it out.

Mick
how do i reload my operating system? would it make a big difference to what im doing now? Try what you're doing now, if that's no good ask again tomorrow, also try a registry cleaner if things are not 100%. I'm guessing that the boot disk you refer to is also your XP installation disk, it's not usually hard re-installing. I do mine anyway every few months just to get rid of crap that I keep building up on my PC, the speed difference is usually easy to see. Make sure you've got the serial number for windows handy if you re-install, you'll not be able to do it without one. Back up anything you have left which is important, things like e-mails, passwords, e-mail settings, that sort of thing. I always forget something, no matter how much I try to save everything important.
