  1. Food for thought for the bed wetters when RTG is laughing at them, even if they're effectively laughing at our not re-achieving something they'll never achieve.

Definitely in the Peter Reid fan club. Victim of a really funny and catchy chant and line of jokes but definitely nothing personal personally nor detected.

Especially considering he's by far the most succesful manager they've had in living memory.

Entitled because you expect it after 2.5 seasons.

1 - we avoided relegation (over delivered)

2- we achieved champs league (over delivered)

3 - we got 7th with worst injury crisis. Above Man U. Most goals scored. Mental cup draws. (Over delivered or at a stretch, par)

But yeah. He should have delivered a trophy

Its also just ignoring how cups work. Its a bit of a pet-hate when people say they fancy a team to win a cup or a manager should deliver one.  And if this team gets Man City away in the 3rd round?

30 years old is seriously not old for a goalkeeper.  In fact I would say they would be in their prime.

Yes I'm an expert on goalkeeping.

Most Premier League winning keepers have been 30 or older, most champions league winning keepers have been 30 or older

Back then wouldn't Everton have gotten the Cup Winners Cup place even if they lost in the final? Like we did in 98.

Chelsea qualified the same way after losing in 94 and finishing mid-table.  It was initially specifically just the Champions League qualifying cup finalist because naturally you wouldn't want to to drop out of that to go in the CWC.

*edit guessing they changed it so that a cup final place against a team already qualified for the UEFA Cup got a place around about the time

the cup was losing its appeal after Man United sat it out and the CWC was disbanded

  5. Were only going to get stronger. This time next year we'll be stronger than we are now.  That's all you can realistically expect and ask and all that's in the clubs hands (cup draws, officialdom are in the laps of the gods).

  6. This season has been so 94/95.

Because of the historical precedence of what happened then and personally predicting this season would be akin to it, I'm not fussed one way or the other about the conference league. Makes no difference to the direction the clubs going in, certainly doesn't hurt a CL challenge - which is important and on a day where the worst Man United side any of us have seen has just beaten Man City and given we usually get knocked out of Europe by teams we should be beating on paper (OM, Sporting, Bilbao, Partizan, Alkmaar) the idea we'd win the conference league because were favourites is fanciful.

I'm desperately trying to find a quote from sir Bobby Robson, it's after a match at st James' park when the sky cameras were on us. It's something like

'i'm telling you now, there's no better place to play a game of football than st James' park'

I really need the quote word for word.

I always thought it was arsenal 1-1 when Robert scored and got sent off, but there's no mention of the quote in the YouTube post match interview

    Can anyone help?

Yeah, Its Manchester City in the FA Cup 01/02 (iirc)

Carragher: Arsenal fans all over the world two footing the television ??

Don't normally stay this long when a result goes against them and they're only 2nd in a title race

That’s not my recollection of the 95 96 shirts they were loved from start. Helped that Ginola was modelling them mind

Yeah but Ginola wasn't modelling them when they were released. It was a team-photo call of the 94/95 team on a grey afternoon early May.

Nobody liked the collar in my small circle at the time and the upon closer inspection beige one on the away shirt took some getting used to.

  10. It looks like the 01-03 home shirt. Seemed to be reasonably accepted to liked at the time and in retrospect. Being shit hot (to Keegans Export 2nd point) while we had it seemed to cover for me that to me it was a distinct step down from the shirt before and after.

The 95/96 shirts were released to reactions of controversial to not impressed and they were pretty much perfection before long.

Expected a lot better than this at this point though.

Dortmund finishing 5th and being in the CL final is a bit wild.

Has any winner of the CL finished as low as 5th in their domestic league?

Technically Marseilles won it in 1993 and got relegated

Me too though the ones in the early Prem years was nothing to remember.

I would have taken either of these 2 sides in the PL to bring that old school feel back.

    1. Leeds

    2. Norwich

    3. Southampton

    4. WBA

    in that order.

Thought they were pretty good. Norwich were challenging for the title and newly promoted Ipswich turned them over twice in 92/93 and the 94/95 game at Portman Road was interesting because of the rain and how feint the lines were causing all kinds of confusion. Neither of the 93/94 matches were televised and 95 was the last game so feel like thats a pretty good ratio.

Probably a few. Real Madrid finished 5th when they won it in 99/00

I would consider the ECL to be. We are not attracting any top class players to come here if we're in it.

I'd go along with that. Its one step up from the intertoto cup. I'd take it but the effect it would have on trying to get into the champions league could be argued to make it exactly a booby prize - unless we win it which the chances are against despite being favourites.

  15. No matter how many other clubs have the same problem and for no matter how long its been the case, after a negative result this topic appears with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season.

I've accepted that's 21st century (earlier really) support and that were really comparing things to a few years in the 90s

Relative to other games against Brighton in any generation it was probably one of the better ones

BUT nobody left early for laps of appreciation in the 90s. Not being able to forgoe catching the first metro or bus and save 20minutes social time away from the pest of having to go to games once a season is shit support and shit attitude in the current circumstances
