Too f***ing right. Thay may as well hold their hands up and say, 'Aye, you've got us there. We've got no tradition or originality of our own. Sorry, lads. We're like Boyzone doing shit cover versions of decent songs. We'll get our coats...'

Surely some mentalist has come up with a song about Blackburn they can use.

Type that again and I will hunt you down. No joke.

I can't understand why you should resort to violence, I wouldn't say Blackburn equate to Boyzone when they're singing Blaydon Races. More like someone you see in the first episode of X-factor who are only on the show for the cringeworthy "so bad it's good moment".

It gets sung quite a few times. Hearing the whole stadium singing it is something else, but it only lasts for one chorus then the east stand/milburn/lower leazes stops while Level 7 and 'the corner' keep it gan for a bit longer.

On a similar theme (songs being "stolen" by other areas) I had a vehement argument at a party recently with a guy from Birmingham who insisted that Cushy Butterfield was a Brummie song.  Even when I quoted him the first verse:

"Aa's a brocken hearted keelman and aa's ower heels in luv

Wiv a young lass from Gatesheed and aa call her my dove,

Her nyem's Cushy Butterfield and she sells yella clay

And her cousin's a muckman, and they caal him Tom Gray."

But it did make me realise how sad a man I am when I can quote from memory an obscure Geordie folksong . . .

I think the Beatles covered that one in their "A day in the life"

heard a news today, oh boy,

four thousand (ass) holes in Blackburn Lancashire,

and though the (ass) holes were rather small,

they had to count them all,

"Blaydon races" is an ADVERT - an ad for George Rileys gig in Blaydon on Race Day

"They called him Jackie Broon

I saw him talking to some chaps

And them he was persuadin'

To gan and see Geordie Ridley's show

At the Mechanics' Hall in Blaydon"

It's thought he composed and sang it a  week or so before in the town and it caught on like wild-fire and became by far his greatest work and the geordie Anthem

When the club was formed it was an obvious choice for OUR anthem

"bubbles" was an enormous popular hit in 1923 when the Hammers first won the Cup Final - they sang it that day and have done so ever since - and good luck to them

teams like Chelski, Arsenal and ManU have no real song  at all
