I definitely said the same about Carroll until the last minute! Don't remember saying that about Nolan, but I did think of him and Barton he was the most likely to stay. Seems strange to play someone and not play him in his natural position. Only other thing I can think of is tiote playing a more box to box role rather than sitting ie contribute more to attack like pardew hinted at last year. Our essien! Tiote = essien? Both mobile, both plenty of energy, both can contribute from deep positions and further forward. As long as they're intelligent enough not to both bomb forward, it should work brilliantly.
