Village Idiot

No idea, it was an off-the-cuff comment from our president. I suppose it was to gauge the popularity of the players, and it would have been weird to leave Messi out even if the result was obvious.

Is it against the law to hold a piece of wood now?

The Danny Simpson of physios:

What's the proper refereeing for this? IIRC the ref can't do nothing if external objects/people disturb the match (like that beach ball in the Sunderland-Liverpool game) since he can't send them off or award a penalty.

Rules according to the BBC say it should had been a drop ball in the beach ball game:

The article says that the physio's intervention kept the score at 2-2 and they went through to the semi on away goals! So it would appear the ref did nothing.

Just been watching the San Lorenzo game from Sunday, some interesting items thrown at the referee after a controversial winning goal included a pink lunchbox, a pair of Adidas trainers and what looked like a Mr. Potato Head toy. Plus the usual lighters and coins.

I was impressed.
