Paul Dummett (now retired)

Recommended Posts

Don’t see the point in it. Even if we disregard the fact he’s not very good, he’s injury prone. Why waste a squad space on him? Targett is the left-back he should be and Burn is the centre-back he should be. There’s just no need for him.

Only real reason I can think is they want to keep Dummett around and transition him into coaching when he retires [emoji38]

I like Dummett as well but as has been said his injury record is tragic.

Going by wiki, he's made around 200 appearances across 10 years at the club, 46 of which came in the championship. 36 appearances in the last 3 years. We shouldn't even be considering an extension for him.

I've no problem with it tbh. I've never considered him a terrible player by any stretch and I think he's had plenty of good performances. And I think there's probably something in every single manager he's played under appearing to absolutely love him.

One reason why we've managed to keep our heads above water since 2017 despite everything is the fact that (but for the odd dip), the squad has had an excellent mentality. Rafa instilled that during his initial revamp of the squad and it's never really gone away; we've never had a repeat of the squads of the likes of 07-09 or 14-16 where next to no one gave a single fuck about NUFC. We had no identity on the pitch after Rafa left but I've never got the impression that the squad has phoned it in; there's been a dressing room 'identity' of good characters who, on the whole, will take responsibility.

I can absolutely see Dummett as one of the carriers of that mentality and therefore a useful person to have around as we transition from a club going nowhere to a club going places. If he was first choice I'd be very concerned about Howe's judgement but that clearly isn't going to be the case.

Very Strange, but i guess having him as a squad player would be a good option since he can play in multiple positions.

I guess given he can cover CB and LB, he gives us options, particularly if we bin off Manquillo.

From the registered squad currently if we want to strengthen the defence it’ll be Fernandez who goes for a new first choice CB, and either Targett or whichever LB we sign. As long as he’s extreme back up as in only plays when Targett/new LB, Burn, Manquillo and Krafth are all out then I’ll live.

Yes it’s cover , but we should try to get better strength in depth (from the bench)

I feel like the fact it’s only a year is just us covering our arses.

Not even sure he’ll get a squad place next year, but even if he’s right down the pecking order I’d sooner have him as a centre half of left back option than the likes of Clark, Ritchie and Lewis.

It seems that the priority this summer is strengthening the attack. Even if we sign a CB and Targett, I guess we need cover if we bin Clark, Fede and potentially Manquillo.

Clearly keeping him around for his leadership in the dressing room and influence amongst the lads. Seriously do see him hanging it up and just joining our coaching setup at some level. Rafa said numerous times he sees PD getting into coaching and could be a top one.

I reckon it's a numbers game. Possibly can't afford to lose another defender, especially when Fernandez, Manquillo, Krafth, Lewis, Clark and Lascelles all could go.

I'm guessing Dummett is on quite a low wage too.  Ultimately, we aren't going to sign 4/5 defenders, so having a local lad who won't kick up a fuss and can play in two positions isn't the worst thing.

He won't get many games at all next year but it seems late in the day for him to be demanding first team, so I can totally understand him wanting to stay on.
