Nobby
By MARTIN PHILLIPS Senior Feature Writer March 02, 2007 THE Sun won another victory in the footie price war yesterday when Blackburn announced an average 25 per cent cut in season tickets. It will make Rovers’ seats the cheapest in the Premiership, with the lowest-priced season ticket costing £249, or just £13 a match. The move takes to SIX the number of top-flight clubs acting on prices since we launched our crusade. Blackburn join Sheffield United, Everton, Bolton, Man City and Chelsea. Our crusade has also been backed by Tony Blair, sports minister Richard Caborn and a host of football pundits. A family of two adults and two children will be able to watch all 19 Premiership matches at Blackburn for £696 — £189 less than the least expensive season ticket for ONE ADULT at Arsenal. Blackburn will use £1million of its new TV cash to fund the deal. Chairman John Williams — the first Premiership chief to use the TV money to help cut prices — hailed The Sun’s efforts to make sure ordinary fans are not priced out of the grounds. He said: “The Sun’s campaign has struck a chord with supporters and we believe the new prices take into account worries of fans and address cost.” Blackburn manager Mark Hughes added: “The players all want to play in front of full stadiums. Hopefully this will encourage even more supporters to come.” http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2007100096,00.html The Football Supporters' Federation wants a flat fee of £15 for all away fans at Premiership matches which would be nice
Dr. Nguyen Van Falk
Love the way The Sun are making it come across as this being down to their campaign
Dave
That's their 'thing', Scy.
Guest thenorthumbrian
Its good that for a first time in ages clubs-some clubs- are having to work to get supporters back in their grounds. With the extra TV money coming into the clubs there can be no excuse to raise prices next year by anyone.
Dave
Of course, it's nothing at all to do with the fact that Blackburn's crowds have been falling like fuck over the last few years, and totally to do with 'generosity' and The Sun's 'campaign'. La Parka
Of course, it's nothing at all to do with the fact that Blackburn's crowds have been falling like f*** over the last few years, and totally to do with 'generosity' and The Sun's 'campaign'. To be fair the Blackburn chairman has been doing this all season with kids free, half price europe tickets etc. My mates a Blackburn fan. Bet he is estatic
Dave
They are addressing the problem finally because they have to. Eventually they'd be hemorraging money left, right and centre. However the clubs like to try and ignore it, the paying fan is still the lifeblood of a club.
Stevie
Our wage bill is too high for us to have any significant reduction in ticket prices.
AyeDubbleYoo
Our wage bill is too high for us to have any significant reduction in ticket prices. Also, there's no need to do it yet as we're nigh-on full (at least for league games). I think we would see us following suit if we were in Blackburn's position with attendences dropping - which we might be if we continue how we are on the pitch. Blackburn is dropping prices because they absolutely need to. We really don't. I'm all for ticket prices that allow us to remain financially competetive. (Assuming we ever get around to using the money we have with half a brain)
Guest Sniffer
Some gestures might be nice though. Like a tenner and a fiver for adults and bairns for Uefa cup games. FFS, they should've paid me for watching the last one.
Ally
Great stuff. Won't happen here for a good while though, Freddy knows that we pretty much fill the ground (for league games) regardless of the price. Like you say though Sniffer, the UEFA Cup games need addressing.
1878
Our wage bill is too high for us to have any significant reduction in ticket prices. The huge increase in Sky money would cover it. For any club.
