hows catch 22? i've always stuck to factual books, but the title catch 22 is tempting. also rockers book sounds good.

Catch 22 is quality!! Makes me laugh out load all the time, got banned from reading it in bed, because my laughing would keep the missus awake. :)

I used to read the Age of Reason a lot. I had a very old paperback version in Paris. (With the Picasso cover).

Recently finished 'The Corporation'.

Just started "Confessions of an Economic hit man", by John Perkins. It's better than the corporation.

Core plot: Secret service specialists embedded in big corporations.

I'll check it out. Next time me mam's through, I might surreptitiously lead her into Waterstones, she's an English teacher, can't go near a bookshop without spending copious amounts of money, if she even catches me looking at a book, she'll buy it. I've got more (as yet)  unread books than I know what to do with!! :)

Anything by Michael Chrichton.

Terry Pratchett writes a meanie too.

Never really got into Terry Pratchet, apart from Good Omens, which is class!! Weirdly enough it's co-written with Neil Gaiman.

Depends what you're after.

I'm quite big on alternative fiction right now.

There's a great series of 9 books (with at least one more on the way) by Harry Turtledove which begins with 'How Few Remain'. The synopsis is the Confederate States of America win the US Civil War and are recognised by Britain and France, turning the US hostile to the two European countries. When the CSA purchase the provinces of Sonora and Chihuahua from cash-strapped Mexico to gain a Pacific coastline, the USA declare war on the CSA who are aided by Britain (and Canada) and France. During the course of the novel, the US in need of an ally becomes friendly with Germany

The story then moves on to the first world war in 'American Front', 'A Walk Through Hell' and 'Breakthroughs'.

The shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand brings Europe to war as in reality. With the US declaring support for their German Allies, the CSA supports Britain, France and Russia and fighting takes place not only in Europe, but across the USA, CSA and Canada.

The post world war 1 situation is told in 'Blood and Iron', The Centre Cannot Hold and the Victorious Opposition.'

The CSA, Britain and France have lost. Germany has taken land from France, the USA land from the CSA. Although Britain has been deprived of Canada and forced to recognise Irish independence they remain a threat. US Occupying forces face terror attacks in Canada. Inflation rocks the CSA and the Fascist Freedom Party is established, gaining popularity on those that betrayed them such as a socialist rebellion by blacks.

Return Engagements, The Drive To The East and the forthcoming book tell the tale of an alternate World War 2.

I never read now. Same reason I never write anything for the site or do any uni work till about 20 minutes before hand in: cos I'm a lazy fucking bastard who doesn't seem able to shake himself into anything or concentrate on anything for longer than 10 minutes.

Annoying tbh.

Thing is, I like working when I'm at work, I'll take all the shifts I can and work hard and enjoy it.

Stuff that requires any form of willpower or concentration though and it's just a no-go.

Sorry for hijacking your thread by the way Parky!

I'd recommend just about anything by Conrad,if you haven't read him.Not bad for 'showing off in the park' value either. Some of the lesser-known Anthony Burgess stuff is great. My favourite is A Dead Man in Deptford,a fictional account of Christopher Marlowe's life in the world of Shakespeare and seedy London taverns.

Having to do uni work on a computer as well as needing the internet to do it is just a recipe for trouble for me. "A day in uni doing work" translates as "A day on the forum doing fuck all".
