  1. Wish we had an ounce of that guy's passion and belief he instills in his players for Newcastle. They all look like 5 levels above this Cup, THAT, is sometimes, what international management is about.

Totally agree. Once you've picked the squad, that seems like it must be the biggest part of the job. How much training or tactical work can you accomplish with players you see 6 weeks out of the year? In a more understated way, I think Klinsmann has done a similiar job with the US. Building confidence and belief.

  2. Greece v. Costa Rica in a World Cup round of 16 match doesn't suggest you need Clairefontaine style youth facilities and elite coaches at all levels of the game in order to be successful in tournaments.

It's a long term problem, but it's not the reason England don't turn up. Countries do more with much, much less.

  3. What's he supposed to say if he's asked whether he misses European Football?  "Nah don't miss it at all".. ???

"Mon dieu, European football is an unprofitable distraction from the prime objective of a 7th to 10th placed finish and I feel sorry for my ignorant team mates in this squad who are wasting their time competing in Europe."

  4. I don't disagree about the gameplan. In hindsight, it simply didn't work. Gerrard wasn't suited for his role in particular. But even then, there were a few positives from the approach in contrast to previous tournaments. They showed enough at times to get results and didn't. England are out of this tournament because of errors from players that know better and lapses in concentration. With a little character, England have at least two points at this point, despite the squad and despite the gaps in Roy's 4-2-3-1. Just shit themselves.
