  1. SYLVAIN Marveaux has 48 hours to convince Alan Pardew he can make an impact in Saturday’s Tyne-Wear derby.

The midfielder hasn’t made a first-team appearance for Newcastle United in FOUR months.

Marveaux’s only run-out came in an Under-21 game against Chelsea at St James’s Park early last month, which was watched by 365 fans.

But the sale of midfield lynchpin Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain – coupled with a number of injuries and Loic Remy’s suspension – could see the 27-year-old return to the squad for the visit of Sunderland to St James’s Park.

Marveaux has shown glimpses of his undoubted talent since joining from Stade Rennais in the summer of 2011.

And his absence from the first-team in recent months has been questioned by supporters, with the the former France Under-21 international fit and available for selection.

Marveaux wasn’t in the squad for Tuesday’s night’s game against Norwich City.

Asked by the Gazette about Marveaux’s non-involvement at Carrow Road, Pardew said: “Sylvain could be involved against Sunderland.”

Pardew wouldn’t elaborate on Marveaux’s situation, though he has previously talked of the need for him – and others – to apply themselves in training day in, day out.

Forward Sammy Ameobi, it seems, has done this, and the 21-year-old was rewarded with a start against Norwich.

And Pardew is looking for attitude and application on the practice pitch from Marveaux, whose natural ability isn’t in question.

With Cabaye’s exit having left a yawning gap in United’s midfield, Marveaux could finally come to the fore at Newcastle – two and a half years after he crossed the Channel.

“First and foremost, you have to show on the training ground that you are worthy of getting your place in this team, or getting in this group,” he said.

“And then we go from there – it’s as simple as that. We haven’t really seen Sammy (Ameobi) get a chance either in this run, and he deserves a chance as much as Sylvain.”

  2.

First Venezuelan to play in the league?

    Fernando Amorebieta

no it was Fernando De Ornelas for Palace in 1999...not sure if Palace were in the Prem League back then but he was the 1st Venezuelan who played in the English leagues

  3. Would prefer Cabella but assume that's just not happening.

Cabella looks better than he is on youtube. Trust me I rather spend £25M on Grenier than 10£M on Cabella.

aye Grenier looks a classier player and been linked with Napoli a few weeks ago who were reportedly offering more than 10m until they settled with Jorginho for a lesser fee. Looks a proper number 10.....

Anyone watched much of Ligue 1 this season? How do Gourcuff (also a number 10 / playmaker) and Grenier both fit into their system as I presume they`re very similar.

  4. Saw a thread on the Newcastle FB forums...

If joe kinnear is allowed to speak at this press conference for Luuk De Jong what name do you think he will call him?

    Some amusing ones....

    Look at my schlong

    Luuk Ding Dong

    Luuk de Mong

    Luuk at his Dong

    Donkey Kong

    Kim Jong il

  5. this is a quote from a few months ago (when he was linked with Man U) by Jean Fernandez.... about the type of player he is

“He’s inconsistent and is an attacking midfielder equivalent of Nani. He’s capable of creating something out of nothing with an amazing Hollywood through ball or a little flick, but more often than not, he has the tendency to go missing.

“His last two Ligue 1 games are great examples of this – booed off the pitch after a poor performance in a goalless draw against Rennes followed by two goals and two assists in a 5-1 demolishing of out of form Lyon.

“Physically, he is very weak too. We’ve all witnessed how long it has taken Shinji Kagawa to adapt to the Premier League and get a first team spot at the club.

“Obviously this differs from player to player but Cabella isn’t half the player Kagawa was at Dortmund and chances are, he’d take a while to adjust to the English game.

  6. Seedorf will be a miss in Brazilian football from what I've heard . He's been doing well there , on and off the field with his extremely professional approach , knowledge and experience that have been a good influence in Brazilian football, particularly to the young players of Botafogo. Would have been nice to see a European player stay over there a bit longer but the Milan job is understandably hard to turn down.

  7. Article by Anal today....."fans favorite"

Jonas Gutierrez is heading for the Newcastle exit door – due to a clause in his contract that triggers a new deal once he has made a set number of appearances, writes Alan Oliver in the Sunday People.

The Toon fans’ favourite, who has played 193 matches since joining in 2008, has a contract at St James’ Park until 2015.

However, Sunday People Sport can reveal that if he plays a certain number of matches – undisclosed by the club – then the Argentina star bags a bumper new deal.

Newcastle, though, do not want that to happen – which could explain why the winger has played just 63 minutes this season with his double-century of appearances agonisingly close.

He has scored just 10 times in 177 league appearances for the Magpies and despite his outstanding work rate, boss Alan Pardew will listen to offers when the transfer window opens.

Pardew has also frozen out fellow fans’ favourite Steven Taylor.

Neither player has started a Premier League game since the opening day 4-0 mauling by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Both were back in the dressing room before half-time that day for different reasons – Taylor for his red card and Gutierrez as the sacrifice for the more defensive Vurnon Anita.

And while the first-team squad were travelling last Friday for the game at Crystal Palace, Gutierrez and Taylor suffered the ignominy of playing for the Newcastle Under-21 side.

Gutierrez also knows he will have to play regular Premier League football if he is to have a chance of making Argentina’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

Olivier Bernard: Ex-Newcastle defender buys Durham City FC

    BBC Sport

Former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard buys non-league Durham City, who play in English football's ninth tier.

    http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25453550

During his playing career, the Frenchman reached the last 16 of the Champions League with the Magpies, playing in Milan's San Siro, Barcelona's Nou Camp and even in Turin's Stadio delle Alpi, the site of England's most glorious of failures.

Now, he will watch his Durham side at New Ferens Park - a ground with a few hundred seats and an artificial pitch.

"For the level the club is playing at, this is a fantastic stadium," he said. "In five to seven years I want Durham to be in the Conference Premier."

Currently, the Citizens play in Northern League Division One - the ninth tier of English football.

"I want to make Durham one of the best feeder clubs in this region," he explained.

"At the moment, I don't think the area develops enough players. I want the three big teams to see this as a place to send their youngsters.

"I'll do everything I can to get around, bring players to Durham, and help develop them in an environment they'll enjoy - that is the key."

Injury curtailed the Paris-born left-back's career in 2007, shortly after he had returned to St James' Park in the hope of adding to his 145 Newcastle appearances. He didn't play again.

Since then, he has worked as an ambassador for anti-racism group Kick It Out.

"Often it's an awkward topic for people to speak about, so by going into schools, and giving public talks it helps break that down," said Bernard.

"Then a few months ago, I got introduced to people at Durham City and the idea was put to me about potentially buying it.

"I saw the facilities and looked at the size of the catchment area. This is a big place, not a little town. Durham should have a much bigger football club."

Having started his career at Olympique Lyonnais, Bernard was signed by then-Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson in 2000.

    How big is Durham?

The City of Durham has a population just short of 100,000 people, while the county of the same name has nearly 400,000 inhabitants.

It is one of just four British counties, along with Cornwall, Northumberland and Rutland, without a professional football club.

After leaving five years later and then having short spells with Southampton and Rangers, he returned to his adopted homeland.

"I had a wonderful career at Newcastle and when I retired I could have gone back to France and I didn't want to," he said.

"The people up here are so warm, a lot more than in Paris. People have so much time for you - I see this as a way to give back to that community that has treated me so well.

"Primarily, I want to raise the profile of Durham City to make it a successful grass-roots development project. And I will do it, I know I will."

  9. Can't believe Sunderland turned down £5m for someone they ain't going to use and whose contract expires his summer. They won't be getting close to that this time round.

What Dortmund sees in Ji though...

    Sell more shirts in Korea?

    Oldtype disagrees.

I'm quite perplexed why they'd want him at well given that he can't get in the squad for the worst team in the Premier League and the Korean national team as well.

he was in the latest squads against Switzerland and Russia . Was a sub in the game against Russia.
