 I would sure hope not, given that Berrada will be Ashworth's boss.

He’ll just be a spoke in Ashworth’s wheel. Imagine a wheel with loads of spokes and no middle bit. That’s what you have.

  2. Weird if they really only offered £2m. I assume Rattledcliffe wants to show everyone he’s a tough negotiator, and an opening bid is expected to be low, but if they do want him then they’ll have to at least quadruple that bid, which would make him look like a shit negotiator.

Coventry 1 shot until the 70th minute.

A shinned goal, a huge deflection and a pen in 24 minutes and suddenly were a spawny team again for winning.

If anyone was lucky there, it was Coventry.

Goal, assist, scored in the shootout for the winning side. Who else?

So they played like Man U?

Press not allowing any good player or manager to be away from their beloved top six shocker.

The sport must be such a boring thing to follow to these people. Just a few proper football clubs and the rest are feeder clubs.

An extremely strange thought process. You spent heavily and have already broke into the status quo.

You're already easily a better side than us and Chelsea and I'd say arugably better than Spurs.

Chelsea are in a unique meltdown. This summer I expect our spending to be pretty restricted.

Anyway it’s not just about Newcastle, all teams should have the chance to compete for trophies, Newcastle are in  a far more fortunate position than most and we do have a slim chance of competing regularly. I’d like to see a far more even playing field throughout the league when it comes to player spending, but I don’t know how we get there. Historically, big outside investment has been the route to the top, but in recent years this has been framed as “cheating” or “financial doping”.

I'm not even criticising, that's the thing. I just refuted one comment that is simply not true.

I'm not suggesting Newcastle are even remotely close to level footing, financially, with the "big 6." I'm just arguing that saying "we can't spend" is just false.

‘We can spend up to a point that ensures we’re not a serious threat to the status quo’, isn’t as snappy.

You need to rephrase. You can't spend what your owners would like to. You have spent £400m since Howe took charge. That's the same as what City has spent in the same timeframe. It's the same as what Man United has spent albeit we have spent it in one less window. It's more than Arsenal and more than Liverpool. The only team who has spent more than Newcastle since you've been bought over is Chelsea.

This narrative that you can't spend is utter bollocks and needs to stop. You've spent a fortune. You're among the highest spenders in the league and will continue to be in the upcoming windows.

We haven’t spent anywhere near Man U and Man City when wage bill is taken into account, and it should be taken into account as it’s the best indicator how how well a team will perform. Obviously a situation where clubs can spend anything they want (which was apparently fantastic up until the last few years) is far from ideal, but the current rules are designed to bake in the games inequality and kill off potential threats to the big 6.

If we do end up with just one main summer signing, what’s everyone’s thoughts on what position it should be ?

I think it would have to be a CB unfortunately. Hermoso and Tosin on free transfers would do me.

Yea but they’re sucking the trophies from clubs like us as well.

If Man City weren’t there our situation wouldn’t change much. Maybe if the rules allowed us to compete then Man City would annoy me more.

City are a despicable club. I actually feel for Wenger. He was building something and City came along and took Nasri, Toure, Clichy and Adebayor in one fell swoop. Totally unbalanced the league and now it’s one behemoth club guaranteed to get top four. Chelsea were easier to stomach because they at least earned top four 02-03.

Without Man City the league would still be unbalanced, and Arsenal et al want it that way. These clubs tried to destroy the league with big picture, remember they wanted a veto on the takeovers for the rest of the league.

Man City acting as a black hole that sucks trophies away from them is the lords work as far as I’m concerned.
