This is getting so complicated, I'll try to summarise, but I'm starting to get confused:

UEFA Cup places:

5th in league

League Cup winners (Spurs)

FA Cup winners

If Portsmouth win the FA Cup, & finish 5th, the cup runners-up get the UEFA Cup place. Wikipedia is right - the only scenario where 6th gets the spot is if both cup finalists were in the top 5 in the league, which is impossible this season.

Hopefully that's right!

So what if Portsmouth finish 5th and beat Cardiff in the final?

I have no idea...  ;D

I guess that it would go to 6th (purely a guess though), but there would most likely be extensive appeals, we'd all get sick of hearing about it and we wouldn't know until 2 minutes before the 1st round kicks off who would actually be playing.

Because if Portsmouth win the FA Cup and finish 5th, the place that was meant to go to 5th will go to 6th and Portsmouth will qualify as the national cup winners.

This is from the wikipedia site, which isn't the best of sources, but I've read it somewhere else too.

In the Wikipedia scenario, the FA cup runners up would get the UEFA cup spot, not 6th place. You're contradicting yourself.

Didn't you get the part where I said Portsmouth would qualify as the national cup winners?

That's how I always thought it would work, but wikipedia doesn't make it clear.

It gets confusing, but from the debate I had on another forum, that was fairly lengthy, we came to a general consensus.

Wikipedia makes it perfectly clear, there is no ambiguity in what it says and it's not confusing at all. It implies if Portsmouth win the FA cup and come 5th then the UEFA cup position will go to the FA cup runner up.

You are contradicting what it says and I prefer to believe the BBC over an article written by some random person based on a 5 year old source.

Seems like you have it all sorted here, so can I just throw a spanner in the works. What happens if Cardiff win the cup?

If Cardiff City win the FA Cup then, as it stands, they are not allowed to qualify for the Uefa Cup because they are registered with the Football Association of Wales and would not be put forward as one of England's representatives. In that instance, the FA Cup runners-up would take their place in the Uefa Cup - although the Football Association are reviewing their rules.

I don't really understand why Cardiff are register with the Welsh FA and not the FA. Yes of course they are Welsh but they play and have played in the English leagues throughout the most part of their history.

They gave up the chance to qualify through Europe by joinging the welsh league. They prefered to stay in the English league, seems strange we would have a team affliated with another FA that we allow to compete in our league unless of course it's the FA that doesn't want them or FIFA insist on it. Seems a weird situation and a little unfair on Cardiff.

Suit yourself.
