Newcastle want two Argentina Olympic aces

sundaymirror.co.uk 24/08/2008

Newcastle are on the trail of two Argentina aces who helped their nation to Olympic football gold yesterday.

Owner Mike Ashley has been so thrilled with the captures of internationals Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Guttierrez that he has ordered talent spotter Tony Jimenez to find more South Americans.

Jimenez has identified Olympic stars Angel di Maria of Benfica and Diego Buonanotte of River Plate, both 20, as targets.

Ashley wants the Magpies' recruiting policy to be aimed at younger players.

Di Maria scored the goal that ensured Argentina retained their Olympic crown in a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in Beijing.

Di Maria struck in a game of few chances in the 59th minute, collecting a pass from Barcelona's Lionel Messi, breaking clear and cleverly chipping goalkeeper Ambruse Vanzekin.

The match was twice stopped so the players could have water breaks in conditions on the pitch of 107 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fifa chief medical officer Jiri Dvorak said: "It was necessary to give the players a break. We are worried about heat stroke."
