Youngsters put a Toon keeper on the spot. The young team smashed 40 goals past Newcastle Academy player Adam Bartlett to raise money for a cancer charity.

Friends and colleagues of Simon McNulty, 34, who died in September, organised the event, at Westgate Community College in Newcastle.

And youngsters also had the opportunity to bid for the chance to be the inspiration for a character in a game being developed for Playstation 3.

Gateshead computer company Eutechnyx will immortalise the winner as an image which will appear as a supporting character in Pimp My Ride, based on an MTV show.

Last night the lads from the Whitley Bay Boys Club's nine-year-old team, known as the Sprogs, were sponsored to score penalties against Bartlett and raised £580 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

First-team defender Peter Ramage was also on hand to dish out medals to the 17 young players.

And the Premiership star was even called upon to play as a substitute.

Simon's former manager Julie Scotland and friends David Appleby and Brian Foreman have been organising a series of events to raise cash in his name.

And Simon's children Robyn, eight, and Joseph, five, opened the scoring.

Julie, 44, an IT business manager at Newcastle City Council, said: "We had worked with Simon for a long time and we just wanted to do something to give something back to the hospice for what they did for Simon.

"It was an excellent night. Peter Ramage was really good with the kids, he spent time playing with them, and with Simon's kids.

"Simon always went to the Newcastle matches with David and Brian. He would have really enjoyed last night."

Simon, from Slatyford in Newcastle, worked as an IT support manager at the city council.

He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December and died in the Marie Curie Hospice on September 1.
