  1. Don't be excited, but the thing is we need squad players, not every signing is going to be a superstar. Not every signing CAN be a superstar.

Exactly.  When the extent of your central midfield options are Geremi (30), Nicky Butt (34 next year), and a player that may or may not be out of prison in time for the season then you need more than one quality signing to compete.  Signing a young 21 year old with Premiership experience strengthens the team.

  2. For starters, the team is slow, short and numerically small.  It doesn't have any creative flair, Viduka never plays, set pieces have been atrocious and the defence struggled against very average attacking talent last season.

But more generally, the league table doesn't lie.  Those 11 players earned their 12th place finish.  Smith and Allardyce were bad, but I'm not scapegoating those two for some collectively inept team performances.  Big Sam wasn't masterminding all those mistakes.  Yes...in the end we were six points off the top 10.  But worrying about relegation in April wasn't just our imagination.  Maybe Keegan can get them playing consistently better, and cracking the top 10.  But that is the absolute limit of where a midfield of Geremi, Butt and Barton will take you, even under excellent management.  I don't want the best possible performance from average players (sub-average when you consider that a team like Pompey has a midfield that is 10x as good as ours) because it will always yield average results in the long term.

You are placing an extraordinary amount of faith in a team that has shown us nothing and putting too much pressure on Keegan to overachieve with players of limited ability.

  3. MaethiS is not a Newcastle supporter.  He has no sources, no original information and there is no Jonas Gutierrez DVD.  All of these responses are probably being cross-posted on a Mackem board so they can have a good laugh.  Or it is a regular poster having fun.

    Please, just ignore him.

MaethiS = SHITEAM = AM SHITE

The joke is waring a bit thin.  You've had your fun, now stop.

  4. Not sure how I'd feel about Sidwell. A bit 'meh' I think.

Exactly my thoughts, I'm not his biggest fan and I don't really see him as much of an improvement on anything we've currently got at the club.

Not only do we not have Premiership quality in his position, we hardly even have players at all.  Maybe we should be aiming higher, but Sidwell would walk into our team (which says more about our squad than his ability).  Butt & Geremi for another Premiership season?  Fucking hell.

  5. And Bassedas, whose struggle to adapt to the Premier League was never down to a lack of commitment, added: “I will be jealous if Jonas is a new hero for Newcastle!

“But if the team and the city are doing well, I will be happy.”

Very gracious from Bassedas.   :aww:  I can't remember much about his time here....didn't he break a leg on the US tour or something?

  6. No ambition??  Getting paid what Harper earns for the amount of work he has done over the past 15 years is the extent of my personal ambition.  I'd be very happy with that gig.  Who wouldn't?  It's not as if the squad have been winning medals and trophies while he sat on the bench.

Swap the badge on both of those and they would be perfect Newcastle kits.  I'm so tired of Adidas, bin them and get Nike ASAP.

  8. The Brazilian right-back, who spent last season on loan at Atlético Mineiro, gained notoriety in his homeland after a harsh challenge on Cruzeiro starlet Kerlon - performing one of his ‘seal dribbles’ - landed him a 120 day ban.

Went and found this on YouTube.

  9. I'm shocked.

Not at the story, which is typical media bullshit, but at the fact that the club put out a denial via the club spokesman in the same news cycle without letting it fester in the papers for the weekend (which was the intention of putting it in on a Friday).

That almost seems like good public relations, I didn't think NUFC did that.

  10. Jesus wept.  Martins to Arsenal, Keegan to be sacked, Ashley selling up, Barton in court again...do we really have another month of this to look forward to?  No more Euro 2008 to use as a distraction either.  The only people who seem to genuinely enjoy the silly season are Spurs supporters.

  11. The Sun. Shaun Custis. Unnamed source. How many times will they print the same tedious story?

ARSENAL are ready to make a move for Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins — if Emmanuel Adebayor is sold.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has long admired Martins, 23, but will not pay the £15million the Toon want.

Even if Adebayor is sold for £30m to Barcelona or AC Milan, Wenger will not change his £11m valuation of Martins.

The Nigerian’s contract has a £13m release clause and that can be triggered if he asks for a transfer.

Newcastle have told Martins’ advisors he can go for the right price and Arsenal have let it be known they are interested.

Martins agreed a new £80,000-a-week contract on Tyneside but the club did not complete the paperwork and the offer has been withdrawn.

A Martins source said: “It is a shock Newcastle cannot find the money any more for his new deal but he is a player a lot of clubs want.”

Adebayor’s future is still in doubt. He said he was staying at Arsenal then insisted the club should accept a good offer for him.

At the weekend he said he wanted the £120,000-a-week Thierry Henry was paid.

How many times has Custis linked Martins to Arsenal?  Let it go man.

    £100M  MANCHESTER CITY KITTY

MARK HUGHES could be handed a £100million transfer bonanza this week if Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra gets the phone call he’s expecting.

The hard-line committee, set up by Thailand’s military government to investigate corruption charges, against former Prime Minister Shinawatra is due to be disbanded tomorrow.

And they are recommending all charges be dropped and Shinawatra’s frozen assets be handed back in full.

That amounts to a staggering £1.3billion.Hughes was originally promised £50m to spend this summer and already £19m has gone on Brazilian striker Jo.

But if Shinawatra gets his hands on his cash pot again then the City manager’s budget could be doubled.

Hughes’ first task, though, will be to see City’s legal team tie up the deal for CSKA Moscow star Jo, who has agreed  a four-year contract.

The only stumbling block will be a work permit because the Brazilian has only one international cap to his name.

But City have already had word from the Home Office that the permit will be granted.

Jo, 20, isn’t in the Brazil squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

But City will argue that the talented hitman would by now have earned many more caps if he’d played in any other national team.

Jo has scored 44 goals in 77 games in two seasons in Moscow and he will be a major boost to Hughes’ assault on the Premier League.

And he could still play a major role in his second signing.

City haven’t given up on Ronaldinho even though AC Milan claim to have hijacked the deal.

Jo is a pal of the Brazilian legend and will try to get him to commit to City.

God help the rest of us if that is true.  7th is the new 4th is the new 1st.

  13. Says a lot for our paucity of left wingers that Joe Cole would get in.

    very harsh

On Joe Cole or England's left-footed talent?  Because I did consider including Heskey or Barmby instead of Cole.  I rate him, but he's done next to nothing in an England shirt.
