  1. I believe there was some guy in 1907 who we bought for thirty bob and sold for five guineas...
  2. One place in London where I work sometimes has more Geordies on the staff than Londoners. When I'm there, the Barley Mow in Duke Street is a great pub to watch Newcastle games. Full of Geordies. Unfortunately loads of scousers turn up there for Liverpool games, but otherwise it's free of rival supporter infestation. Barley Mow is a good one, when a big toon match is on it's absolutely heaving. There used to be another good place, in Covent Garden. I can't remember its name (had the word "green" in it) and it closed down shortly after I discovered it, but I had a really funny night there watching some cup game against Blackburn. The whole place singing "Geordie Boot Boys" and mocking a handful of Blackburn fans, one of whom got so wound up he went a bit mental and had to be pacified by the bar staff.

  4. OK, I surrender. You win the Nobel Pedantry Prize.

  6. Ah, i see that now. Stupid smilies. It was still 9 in 48, mind, in the league - the only genuine comparitor domestically. Fixed it now in my original post. And actually it was 9 in 36, in the league. Then another 9 in 11, in Europe.
  7. For footballing purposes, Scotland is most definitely a foreign country. Different league, different national team.
  8. Oh, I see. That was accidental – 8 followed by a bracket? I thought I'd got rid of it. 8)
  9. I never found a single other Mag in Lisbon – and I would have spotted any, as there was only one Sky pub there at that time. (In Cascais, 40 minutes on the train from the city centre.) I spent some time in Budapest, where there was one lad from Morpeth. But, strangely, there was a bunch of lads from Szekesfehervar (Hungary's equivalent of Swindon) who turned up to watch the Arsenal FA Cup Final in full replica kit. They didn't speak a word of English but did manage a mangled version of "Toon! Toon! Black and white army!"
  10. Why not? Where would you like to set the bar? Since 1892? I suppose I was thinking post-Keegan, Shepherd in charge years.
  11. Spot on. Makes you pretty much hate all other English clubs after a short while. The exception to that rule is if you are in San Francisco or New York City which both (for some odd reason) have a large Geordie contingent. Yeah, last time I was in New York was in October 2000, not long after a League Cup game against Leyton Orient, which I'd been at. Me and one of the others I was with checked in to our Midtown hotel, and then nipped out for a beer in one of those Irish bars on 44th Street, or thereabouts. And I'm sitting in this place, telling my friend a story about something that had happened at the Orient game, and a guy a couple of tables away shouts out: "Hey, I was at that game too!" A Geordie (of Pakistani descent) who lived in NYC.
  12. Both more than ten years ago, but someone posted upthread that we made a profit on Ruel Fox, and we seem to have bought Huckerby for £450,000 and sold him for a million.
  13. Where did you hear that, then? Can't remember, but it can't be far off Can't it? A hundred million quid? I'd love to see the calculation.
  14. How man, you're a Newcastle Fan. We're United, they're ManUre. Exactly, yet i keep forgetting that, mainly because here (in my country) keep calling them United... What country is that? Bahrain,in the persian gulf filled with Manure fans,i might be one of very very few people who support Newcastle, when wearing the team jersy usually get the "who the heck supports Newcastle" ... Yeah, I can imagine. My experience of watching Newcastle games on TVs in pubs and bars abroad is that if we're playing Man U or Arsenal or Chelsea, the place will be full of fans of that club, and I'll be the only one rooting for Newcastle. But if we're playing a "smaller" club, everyone will be "supporting the underdog", and we never seem to count as the underdog, so I'll still be the only one rooting for Newcastle.
  15. What a load of sh*te man. Where's the reasoning that "but had Owen been fit, we might have scored an extra 15-20 goals this season, been 4 places (or £2m higher), and still in cup competition. aye, without even looking, I KNOW that macbeth will portray the club in the worst light possible, and not consider the playing side of it. So why bother. Just think where we would be if we hadn't bought Woodgate, Dyer, Bellamy, Robert, Parker, Butt, Martins, Owen etc etc over the past years, instead buying players for 500 grand or something to keep the books right. Aye, and just think where we'd be if we hadn't bought Marcelino, Maric, Viana, Cort, Luque, Bassedas and Boumsong. 45m quid the lot. Aye, all the shite boards back their managers with that sort of money, just like their predecessors always bought international footballers instead of selling them all. As a long term - cough cough - fan you know this though don't you. BTW - you forgot your hero Arsprilla, who scored 2 goals in his last season, and played well in about 1 game in 10 before that anyway. Are you still dishing the dirt on the club you say you support to lundun scumbag journos who hate Newcastle ? Are you still confusing me with Freddie Shepherd and Douglas Hall? 45m quid the lot. Aye, all the shite boards back their managers with that sort of money, just like their predecessors always bought international footballers instead of selling them all. As a long term - cough cough - fan you know this though don't you. BTW - you forgot your hero Arsprilla, who scored 2 goals in his last season, and played well in about 1 game in 10 before that anyway. 18 goals in 50 appearances (1:2.8) . Better than, say, Wyn Davies (1:4.1) but not quite as good as Pop Robson (1:2.5). And yeah, I do know what year it is. You're the one who seems to have difficulty understanding that a lot more has changed in the last 20-30 years than just the composition of the board. nearer 1:3 than one in 2, in fairness, according to your figures. Wrong. I used a calculator. It was actually 2.77777777. I rounded up all three goal ratios to the nearest single decimal point.

  17. Didn't we have to pay £500,000 for Bernard? Not as a transfer fee. It was some kind of compensation.
  18. we made a hell of a profit out of players like Gazza, Beardsley and Waddle. Shame we don't make managers sell players like that anymore eh eh mackems.gif Les Ferdinand. I miss him. He was one of my favourites too. Seemed a genuinely nice bloke as well as a top centre forward. One of the few times I've given a toss about a player from another team getting crocked was him, straight after he left us. What a player he was. People shite on about Ameobi being a good enough striker, and Dyer contributing to the team, but there was a fella who WAS good enough, and contributed massively, and was a genuine asset to the team. I remember watching an interview with him, sometime after he'd gone. He was asked about it and seemed saddened it had happened. He then said something like "But you have to learn that in this business you're just a commodity." It made me think about the fact that this was the other side of the coin from the issue of some players not caring about clubs much beyond the size of their wage packets. Not that anyone could have ever levelled that complaint against Sir Les.
