  1. Sorry if people like him or whatever, I just can't get on with the whole hoying a few spreadsheets of dubious figures onto twitter and then acting like he's cracked the inner workings of the club from it like he often does. [emoji38]

Obviously the club's shite, I agree with that. Just don't his whole shtick.

Find this a tad disappointing since you were the one that suggested  I hoy my dubious figures into a blog ten years back.

Keep on keeping on, man.

It's fair enough tbh.  I cringe at anything I wrote more than a week myself

I don't think I ever apologised to everyone on here that I ever told Pardew was about the limit of who Ashley was capable of appointing for us.  I know I eventually became Terminator 2 and fought the good fight when it became totally intolerable, but Jesus Wept.

Thank the lord that Rafa approached us and saved the fat fuck from himself (and Carver/McClaren).

  4. Morning all, sorry to return only to whore myself, but some might find this useful.

Sick of there not being any app or twitter account that will push a notification to my phone just for the main nufc related news (team lineups, goals, completed transfers and when tickets are on sale) without a load of other content getting pushed at me.

So I'm playing with doing my own - @NUFCalerts

Follow and set up mobile notifications if you want instant alerts for all of the above... as long as I have a data connection and get the club notifications in the first place :)

  5. I've had a couple of articles in the Chronicle but nowt on the finances.

I think they try not to go off piste on the accounts.  They'll cover the points raised in each set of accounts and repeat the club talking points, but when it comes to building an overall pattern and damning the club for it, I think they don't have the accountancy experts they would like to be comfortable going to print on it.

Not that I'm an expert, but that's the point, they can't have my wild accusations being printed without covering their arse with an expensive expert to double check all the numbers.

I missed this one off the Mag article...

    Sports Direct

Ashley's shop were paid a further £2.3m last season by Newcastle.  This means that over three seasons they have received a total of £5.9m.  Under £2m has been paid the other way from Sports Direct to the club, which means the net transfer of money has been £4m from Newcastle to the sporting goods chain.

    CgBI7aTXIAEUHS-.jpg:large

As has been reported elsewhere, the accounts do state that from next year Sports Direct will pay Newcastle United for Promotional services.  However, this is unrelated to the retail agreement that the above outlines.  It only covers advertising in the stadium and at the training ground.

We do not know any details behind the deal that Newcastle get from the owner's shop.  Given that the bulk of incoming funds were received in 2013, one would hazard a guess that this was for stock the club still owned and it will not be repeated.  The payments to Sports Direct could cover materials, manufacture, storage, transport, rent or any number of things.  But the accounts don't break it down in any further detail.

Under the retail deal that Rangers had with Sports Direct, the club earned 4p for every £1 spent in club stores.

  6. Newcastle United will beg Rafa Benitez to stay - even if they are relegated to the Championship

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/20/newcastle-united-will-beg-rafa-benitez-to-stay---even-if-they-ar/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Newcastle United will plead with Rafa Benitez to remain as manager, even if they are relegated to the Championship, and hope the emotional bond he has built with supporters will persuade him to stay on Tyneside.

Newcastle ambassador and board member Bob Moncur has already asked Benitez to give an assurance he will stay after relegation, but Benitez is not willing to promise anything at this stage and will only discuss the matter at the end of the season.

Benitez has a clause in his contract that allows him to quit if he fails to save Newcastle from relegation and he is extremely reluctant to manage in the Championship. As things stand, he intends to leave if they go down.

However, Benitez is also aware of how much support he has among the club’s fans, who sang his name throughout Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City and he remains excited by the club’s untapped potential.

The Spaniard only took the Newcastle job because he believes it can eventually challenge for a Champions League place, in the same way Tottenham Hotspur have achieved with similar resources and fan base.

However, he also knows the size of the task will be huge if they go down and there is no guarantee they will make an immediate return to the Premier League.

For a manager who was in charge of Spanish giants Real Madrid at the start of the year, the thought of trips to Rotherham and Preston holds little appeal.

Benitez has carefully avoided answering questions about his future if Newcastle go down, merely saying he wants the club to remain in the top flight.

Newcastle, though, are determined to keep him, even if he fails in his short term aim, and are willing to make a series of promises to the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real boss in a desperate effort to stop him quitting.

Benitez will be given full control over recruitment, which will almost certainly lead to the departure of chief scout Graham Carr, and will also be allowed to retain the players he wants to keep from the current squad.

Several of the club’s best players will want to leave if they are relegated, but Benitez will not be ordered to part with anyone who is willing to take on the challenge of returning the club to the Premier League.

If he is going to change his mind about managing in the Championship, Benitez will want assurances he will have the funds needed to rebuild the squad, despite the financial catastrophe of relegation.

That could force owner Mike Ashley to put his own money into the club, something he has previously insisted he is unwilling to do.

That could be achieved  if the owner is willing to start paying for the free advertising he receives at St James’ Park and at the club’s Benton training ground.

The stadium is covered in branding for his sports shop, which are also prominent on the electronic billboards around the pitch.

Telegraph Sport understands the possibility of Ashley paying for this perk of ownership has been discussed and the billionaire has not ruled it out, particularly as it would help Newcastle comply with the Football League’s Financial Fair play regulations.

Newcastle players are also desperate for Benitez to stay, impressing them with his leadership skills and coaching since replacing Steve McClaren last month.

The bit in bold is interesting.

Not sure why the Telegraph are claiming that as some sort of inside track.  The Mag reported on the statement in the accounts last week that said SD will now pay for promotion.

  7. No, but it seems by far and away the most likely outcome.

I've done some complicated sums and worked out the chances of each option.

    1. Relegated, he walks (90%)

    2. Relegated, he wants to stay, Ashley gets rid (5%)

    3. We stop up, Ashley pisses him off by listening to the footballing acumen of messrs Charnley & Moncur, he walks (4%)

    4. We stop up, he stays, everyone is happy and we climb the league (1%)

  8. Not really interested in what you 'think'.  Gates have dropped but we're still one of the best supported clubs in the country.  Don't know about match day revenue as I didn't mention that at all, that's your thing.

You seem to have missed my point entirely.

Deloitte say the matchday income the accounts will confirm in a couple of months will be up on 13/14, even having played 3 fewer home games.  Both other revenue streams (TV & commercial) have dropped.

Remarkable that the fans are the only ones still pumping growing sums into the club... but being called delusional, fickle and over demanding.

  9. He hasn't taken any money out? Nah, he's just restricted our revenue streams and used the club to get free advertising.

    ...and taken £11m out.

It's a strange article.  In one paragraph he's arguing that Ashley is brilliant because the financials are excellent with the club on a self financing even keel and in another paragraph he's lauding Ashley for ongoing personal investment being made into the club.

It's got to be one or the other, they can't have their cake and eat it.  Either it needs his investment or it doesn't.

    It doesn't.

  10. Why are we spending in January? Why wasn't Shelvey bought in the summer? Are we going to split our money between summer and winter transfer windows in the coming years? If not, why was this year different?

You say we aren't spending because of a fear of relegation, well, if so, we should be spending every summer and every January in the future.

We haven't really been in a position of strength long enough to know whether spending will be curbed. I'm not saying it definitely will just that a relatively small sample of data, in a specific set of circumstances, (i.e. always pretty much in danger), means that it's difficult to say whether this money was always going to be spent at this time.

I just think it's weird that the club have gone on record to say they don't like dealing in January and then buy 2/3 (maybe 4) players in January. The last time we bought that amount in January being the last time we were panicking about relegation at this time of year...

I'm not arguing that spending hasn't been brought forward due to the threat of relegation, like the winter we bought Sissoko and co (so had nothing left to spend the following summer.)

I was responding to the argument "8 years of chronic under investment has forced his hand and he'll now be sh*tting himself" by offering the reminder that the club has spent all it's available funds consistently over the past 8 years.  I don't think there has been 8 years of chronic under-investment because I don't think a club should be subsidised by borrowing.

The club has always preferred to spend the available sums in the summer, and I fear for the Summer spending given what's been thrown at the situation this month - though I would think we will recoup a good wedge by selling failures and wantaways like Sissoko, Tiote, Thauvin, Cabella, Cisse etc as well as some talent I'd rather not lose (wijnaldum & Perez).

  11. So many thick fucks out there.  If we were lying 8th say 6-7 points of a European place, would gravy blood supply the dosh to get us there?  Would he hell.

Gravy blood hasn't supplied any dosh to buy us out of trouble in any situation, no matter how dire, since we were in the championship.

That's the point, the club is and always has been allowed to spend what it earns as long as it doesn't lead to reporting an accounting loss, other than an £11m loan repayment to Ashley in 2012 - £18m shy of what he had been planning to take out.

No other cash in the club is being sat on longer than half a season until the next window opens, let alone being siphoned out.

  12. Now that he has sanctioned the Townsend deal hopefully people will forgive and forget. The bloke is putting so much money into us lately surely no one can doubt his commitment.. People have said he is putting nothing into the club but just look at how much money he has spent from his own fortune!!  O0

Obviously tongue in cheek but there'll be loads now who'll have that opinion for real, not being able to grasp that 8 years of chronic under investment has forced his hand and he'll now be sh*tting himself over the possibility of missing out on next seasons TV bonanza. Unfortunately for him, even if we do sign a striker, the manager he appointed to get the results needed clearly isn't capable of doing so.

While I'm sure he is very worried about relegation, we spent £50m+ in the summer too when he could have sat back and seen how things went.

I don't think we're spending because of the threat of relegation, I think we always planned to spend the money the club has generated, as we have in all the previous seasons where we didn't sell anyone at £20m+ profit.

I think the players we're buying are a more telling change in policy in that we're buying Premier league experience I don't think we would have done if we were higher up the table.

If the plan is to constantly spend the money the club brings in and not just when facing the threat of relegation then why did we end up with 35m sitting in a bank account at one point?

Because we sold Cabaye for £20m that January and spent that profit and the profit from 13/14 revenues in the Summer after the books showed a snapshot of cash balances in June.  Preference to spend in Summer cash that's been earned.  So we had £35m in the bank on June 30th and spent £37.4m in July/August.

We haven't really seen a big enough sample (because we've more often than not been s***) but I think we're only willing to spend when we need to. Why else buy in January when it's, according to the club, a poor time to do business? Why not buy Shelvey in the summer?

Like Wullie says, they s*** themselves in the summer and they're shitting themselves now.

I'd seen a big enough sample back in September 2014 when I was pointing to consistently increased spending and saying we'd continue to be spending more.

    Revisited my view in Summer..

    http://www.themag.co.uk/2015/07/a-corner-turned-or-history-repeating-newcastle-united-transfer-spending/

I pointed to the growth in spending being a year on year pattern that was clearly going to continue but got stick on here for it because the sale of Cabaye meant one year didn't follow the trend.

I can only see the increased spending continuing as long as we stay in the league, regardless of where we sit in the league.

  13. Now that he has sanctioned the Townsend deal hopefully people will forgive and forget. The bloke is putting so much money into us lately surely no one can doubt his commitment.. Ridiculous statement. Take Wijnaldum, Mitrovic and Mbemba out of this squad and "seen how things went"?

We'd be propping up Aston Villa.

Summer spending wasn't about doing the minimum to survive though.  Spending more than 18 other clubs isn't a strategy to just survive.

  14. Now that he has sanctioned the Townsend deal hopefully people will forgive and forget. The bloke is putting so much money into us lately surely no one can doubt his commitment..
