  1. BBC football pundit Steve Claridge is to come out of retirement to sign for Southern League side Gosport Borough as a player-coach.

Claridge, 45, has played over 1,000 professional matches in a career spanning more than two decades.

He will go straight into the Gosport side for the South Hampshire FA Trophy tie against Sholing on Saturday.

"There are not many signings that excite me but he can only be an asset," said Gosport manager Alex Pike.

"Steve's arrival has already had a great effect in the dressing room as the whole squad at Thursday's training session raised their game.

"It was a great session and I'm glad Steve was very impressed by the quality of our players and the club."

Claridge began his professional career at Bournemouth in 1984 where he later returned in 2006, marking his 1,000th game as a professional with a 4-0 defeat by Port Vale.

He went on to have spells at Aldershot, Cambridge United, Birmingham City, Leicester City, Wolves and Millwall.

While at Leicester, Claridge won the League Cup in 1997 and also won the old First Division (Championship) title there in 1996.

But he is perhaps best known for the time he spent at Fratton Park, where he scored 34 goals for Portsmouth between 1998 and 2001 and also had a spell there as manager.

Claridge also had two other managerial appointments with Weymouth and a brief period at Millwall which lasted only 36 days.

More recently Claridge has made a few appearances at non-league sides Worthing, Harrow Borough and Weymouth, while also carving out a career as a football pundit for the BBC.

Claridge will continue with his media commitments for the BBC, which include appearing as a pundit on the Football League show and Football Focus.

    :yeah:

  2. Just wait until NUFC have their bad run, then you'll see, they've played no one of note yet.

    o'shea will come good.

They can't exactly talk when they've lost easier games than us.

  3. This season, Mehdi Abeid has agreed to write a regular blog exclusively for nufc.co.uk. He'll detail how he's settling in with his new environment after moving to Tyneside from Lens last summer, and in his first installment he touches upon his first two goals for the club and his international future...

I was really happy to score my first goals for Newcastle in the friendly at York this week.

Since joining the club in the summer, I hadn't scored but on Wednesday I got two which was a great feeling.

But I don't want to stop there. I want to score again now and I hope to get another one when we play Liverpool at home next week!

It has been a busy few days as I have been away with the Algeria under-23 squad.

Although I was born in France, my parents are Algerian and while I have played for France at youth level, I'm eligible for either country and they both mean a lot to me.

It was a very good experience. We played a friendly game last Wednesday and another on Saturday, and I learnt a lot.

We played well in both matches. The standard was high and there were some very good players, so I think it will help me.

It's good to go away with the national team for a change of scenery. I saw a lot of good things, so the whole thing was very good for me.

But I still do not know who I would like to represent at full international level if the chance came around.

At this stage, it's just for the young team so I could still go with France or Algeria.

Eventually I will have to make a decision, I hope, but at the moment I have not made a choice. I will do that later.

I have time - I'm only 19 years old - so for now I just want to learn with my club. That's the most important thing for now and I will make a choice at international level later.

I've been at Newcastle for about six months now and I'm really happy here. I'm really enjoying it.

I feel good. I'm enjoying my football, I'm enjoying my time here and I'll keep working hard to one day get my chance with the first-team.

I made my debut against Nottingham Forest last month and I really hope to have more time with the first-team in the future.

That's what I want and that's the challenge for me now. I want to play with the first-team this season if possible, but certainly in years to come.

But I hope to do well in every game, whether it's with the Reserves or the first-team.

It was good to come back this week and play in a good game against a good team in York, and win.

It's great that we continue to win and win at very level, and we can have a great season, I hope.

  4. Such a badly organized affair. The shuttle bus from the race course to the stadium must have stopped really early. We got there at 12.45 and there were about 50 people waiting and everyone had to get back in their cars as no bus turned up by 1.15. We had to park in the retail park near tesco and missed the first 20 mins. When we got there it seemed oversold and we ended up having the tallest steward in the world blocking our view for most of the game. Saw traffic wardens in force ticketing loads of cars in the residential area near the stadium

The online stream for the match wasn't working for many people too, apparently, after they paid their £10 fee.

  5. Henderson played well today. Started a little shakey, but quickly found his feet and scored a cracking header.

Ebbsfleet weren't the greatest, so will be a much tougher test at Luton next Saturday. Hopefully he'll have another solid game.

    You're welcome  O0

Seriously though, wish we'd make the link between the two club official and support Gateshead with players at a more regular rate. I take it most of our loan lads have turned out well, tav was decent, edmunsson was ok, sure there is more, if not there should be. Campbell and streete next year for me.

Jak Alnwick originally joined on a month's loan too, and he's extended it by another month i think.

He's only on the bench for them though.

Yeah, just getting a bit of experience as cover since we have three goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment.
