When we play out from the back this weakness sort of gets skipped over. But this season when teams have pressed us, he’s had to go long and you can just never be confident. I’m sure the stats can be found but I wouldn’t be shocked if 90% if his long kicks resulted in losing possession.

That’s a huge issue to sort.

I suppose it depends how you see it. I think the stat is we had the equal best defensive record, or one of the best up to the point Pope got injured. I think that matters more than whether Pope can ping passes around, or even have better ability with his feet than he has now.  We do indeed need to upgrade. However, my opinion in the short term is, it's not that something we need to address right now.

And the pressing issue imo, was more us not having the squad to play how we wanted to, due to the injuries we had. We had no option to rotate or rest, and even try different things.  Be interesting to see what happens next season on how we approach new signings, especially with all the things we've been highlighting and have differing opinions on. I think it's going to fascinating actually, to see what positions we address in the next couple of months.

Most (myself included) didn't think we needed to upgrade dubravka when we signed Pope, but then saw the difference in quality it made to us as a team.

The club has said before that they will grab players they feel are good value, and being nearly a decade younger then Pope they probably see him as the long term successor, and it's better to get him for 30 Mil now the 50 Mil in a couple of years time.

Fair points. I guess the financial gymnastics we need to do comes down the judgement calls on what positions. And as you say, £30m now rather than £50m is better.

If it does happen, it'll show a ruthlessness in Eddie, i'm not sure we all see.

Because he can’t kick a ball properly.

Yeah, that part is fair enough. Not overly worried about that at the moment myself. Imo we could spend the money in other areas, for now.

Whether it's this guy or not, it looks almost certain we'll be bringing a first choice keeper in.

Where's the evidence for that (if this guys sign, exhibit number one ) ?  Pope's injury aside, he's done nowt wrong, and i don't see the need with our financial restraints for an expensive new number one GK. However, if Eddie thinks it, then I'm onboard.

Makes perfect sense to me.  It’s an area where we could clearly use an upgrade.

Along with centre forward it’s the position on the pitch which is most important to get right.  A top goalkeeper can win almost as many points as a top centre forward.  We conceded 60-odd league goals last season - where might we have finished with a truly first-rank goalie in nets?

I’m still in a little bit of shock that we’re going in for someone at his level.  It’s good shock, mind :)

Why would we need to upgrade Nick Pope ?  That's the part that makes no sense to me. I just can't see us bringing in a GK at over £30m alongside Pope. And i can't see Pope leaving, just don't see that as happening, but you never know.

And you're right, it's a good shock if true with his ability.

Now, I may be being Mr Grumpypants, but are we perhaps getting a tad ahead of ourselves here?

Are these sources reliable?... I mean where are they on the Casey-Ornstein scale of accuracy?

I'm with you Grumpy, think this bollocks myself. I'm defo onboard the miserable express

  7. Christ my first impressions of him were completely wrong, what an absolute and utterly fantastic human being he is. If you can't love such a great lad you'll never love anything.

Yeah, I could see that being an option, but the problem is that is likely to mean Longstaff coming in as the 3rd starter in those instances. And honestly, I'm no longer comfortable with that at all. I want him pushed down further.

Well i would say Joe or Joe would come in alongside them two. Fitness permitting we might have the chance to properly rotate next season. so you can chuck in Anderson, Miley as well as Longstaff.  Lots of option IF they stay fit in numbers.

Barkley is on a free. We don't have anyone that is close to providing what Bruno does when he isn't available. This whole discussion is centred around funding a cheap backup.

I thought we did in Tonali, we've just not seen him play.  Be it alongside Bruno, to rest Bruno, not as good but similar enough imo. We don't need a back up Bruno imo, we're stocked with decenty quality in CM, it's just the injuries killed us in there.

Looks like McKenna's going to be linked with half the Premier League by the end of the summer.

Including us if we don't get 7th, you can imagine the bullshit headlines. 'The Saudi's Want Howe's Head' for missing out on Europe.  Just endless complete bollocks.

  11. We're not buying him at all, complete load of made up bollocks imo.

With FFP/PSR or whatever the big 6 fannies shitty little creation is called, there's no way we're laying out £40m on a reserve GK, or for a main GK making Pope our reserves, just complete arse gravy nonsense.
