Isn't it just because circle shapes are easier to print, use on websites etc than irregular shapes. Not saying i agree, but i think that's the reason.

Is that one of the older crests? Or it's very similar. I've got a hat with the current crest on the front, that one, and the NUFC in a circle shape on the sides.

It's meant to be change strip i.e. only used when clashed. Teams colours are their home colours and they should be worn as often as possible imo.
