You mean to attend the stadium? £40-£60 a game (ish) in Newcastle, that’s probably one of the cheaper clubs  Spurs tickets run to £100+

Before Covid there was no way to watch all the games live, the 3pm Saturday games aren’t allowed on TV.

To watch every PL game that was on you’d need a fairly premium Sky TV package plus additional BT Sport. I’ve never had it, but maybe £80+ per month? But that wouldn’t get you all of your own team’s games.

Edit: Oh, and £7.99 for Amazon Prime as they have games now.

Meant on tv, and holy shit at the bolded.  You guys are getting taken for a ride.

Producing games isn’t easy at all, and very costly, if it was, club’s would have done this a long time ago. Generating revenue is easy if you have a guaranteed audience, but the profitability from that revenue isn’t as big as you’d imagine it to be. If it was, Sky would have ditched the rest of their programming and concentrated solely on sport, and especially football.

It is pretty easy, the reason they haven't is that they (I assume) don't control their broadcast rights for PL games.  NESN and YES are huge money makers for the red sox and yankees, and they were allowed to create those channels because of the way MLB broadcast rights were handled.

I don’t care about anything except the live games. Maybe £20 a month, or £200 a season?

MLB TV is something like $120 for the whole season, 160 games for every team including watching them all back on demand, highlights and abridged games. But local games are blacked out.

Biggest reason I haven't bought it.  I'm a red sox fan, and every game against the cubs, white sox, brewers, twins, royals, and cards are blacked out for my region, even though we only get the white sox games locally.

Just for the fans, it seems like you need one affordable thing you can buy to watch your team. Needing a Sky package with loads of stuff you don’t watch, plus BT Sport is too much. And pre-covid you still wouldn’t be able to watch all the games.

It’s pretty old fashioned and not very customer focused.

Since I don't live over there, how much would it cost a local NUFC fan to watch every game live?

I mean I can watch every Packers game live on Hulu, without paying anything extra.

It’s kind of on demand anyway, because we still have to pay a subscription fee to watch a live game of footy, even on the BBC, ITV etc. your TV licence fee is you paying still to watch a live game broadcast on terrestrial TV somewhat.

Anyway it will never happen because of the costs involved in the full production of live football to transmit live, that’s why clubs haven’t went down the route of doing their own live streaming, instead they opted for their own TV channels which they pay others to look after the content for them like with their websites.

I think the reason for that is that producing the games is easy, but producing other content, and generating revenue from it, is more difficult.  You could see that in the US with the first few years of the Big Ten Network.

I don't see how a on demand subscription model would work tbh or why anyone involved from football administrative would want it tbh.

Sky is paying something like £10m a PL game at the moment.  That's a ridiculous amount to coup back for the PL and other leagues, having the TV deals as they are now protects the leagues from such a risk.  I can't see a provider will to take such a risk, Amazon's deal works well as it was a small package which they used a loss leader for prime.

I also think there's too much football on in general tbh.

Just another way for the bigger clubs to get a larger cut.  I'd assume teams would get some cut of the revenues from the PPV for their games, and their games will get the most buys.  Over the course of a season Liverpool games will get more buys than Fullham games, and so Liverpool would get more PPV revenue than Fullham.

Like when you watch an MLB game on MLB TV, the TV feed itself is coming from people like SNY in New York or whatever the other regional ones are called. There’s already a network of companies filming the games, not one large one like we have with Sky.

Ah, that makes sense.  I was just confused by the state and cities part. Thought you might be implying it was run by local and state governments, which is what confused me.  Something to keep in mind when making comparisons with US sports models is that the US is the size of your continent, so we are naturally going to be more decentralized.

  8. 3 minutes ago, AyeDubbleYoo said:

The American sports have online platforms but they’re just using the feed from the traditional TV broadcasters. They don’t seem to have one monolithic broadcast like we do though, the state and cities have their own.

It is amazing to be able to buy one pass for the whole league though, and obviously the quality of the app and service is much better than anything we have here.

I'm confused about what you mean by the bolded.  Are you talking about team owned channels like NESN/YES, or regional stations like FSN, or what?

The biggest issue with the league passes like MLBtv is all the game blackouts.

  9. Who was the poster constantly talking about redbird capital?  Looks like they'll be buying a large chunk of Fenway Sports Group - https://www.wsj.com/articles/red-sox-owner-in-talks-for-deal-with-redball-acquisition-11602286661

That would be Penn. Guess he just posted the information on the wrong forum all along :shifty:

Being wrong doesn't sound like him

It's crazy to me that a team like the Red Sox, in a sport that commentators here constantly claim is dying, is still probably more valuable than the bottom 12 premier league teams combined.

EDIT: I'm a red sox fan, but they are only the 3rd most valuable MLB team at best.

  10. We don't have a lot of money to pay upfront.

Why is that? The new stand at Anfield? With the success Liverpool have had in recent years I'd have thought they be loaded.

I dont quite understand the details provided here: https://www.empireofthekop.com/2020/09/07/why-liverpool-arent-spending-brilliant-swiss-ramble-thread-reveals-all/

FSG has invested quite a bit into the new main stand and is spending 50-60 million on a new training facility. That is a factor. They were also planning to submit paperwork to obtain permission for Anfield Road End Expansion but as of now, they have stopped it.

Also, based on my limited understanding, the wages we provide are incentivized by a heavy bonus structure if we win anything big. Last two years, we won the champions league and the premier league. Our wage bill has grown a lot due to that. Mane, Salah, Van Dijk, Alisson all make 150-200K. If we win anything big they make generous bonus. I remember our CEO commenting to one journalist last year that we dont make any additional money as a club by winning the champions league as the win bonuses take care of that. Again, I might be simplifying or misinterpreting these things.

With all of that, we were at an operating profit but it seems COVID-19 has wiped it out.

I also believe FSG are being extra cautious due to dual exposure from Liverpool as well as Red Sox. It looks like Red Sox is also projected to experience huge losses this year. FSG are rich but not Abramovich or City rich who can write off losses from two clubs in a year.

It is in a way irritating in the sense that I thought this summer we could compete for the truly elite talent. That is not happening. But I dont want to appear as complaining. FSG have been brilliant owners. Everything we make goes right into the club. The club lives within its means and when extra cash is needed - ground expansion, training facility - they have injected cash in the form of zero or low interest loans I believe.

I'm a red sox fan, and there have been some questions about Henry and Werner, and if they are losing a lot of money right now.  The Red Sox just cut a lot of scouting positions.

  11. No, but the stats help you work out whether it's skill or luck. If you only judge things on results, you might not appreciate what's really going on. You can be bad and still win, but that might not be sustainable.

well put - what was that period where we were picking results with our defenders scoring random goals as we were dicked off the pitch in most games?  he doesn't "deserve credit" for that because winning games by having your defenders score all the goals isn't a tactical plan, it was f***ing luck

12 goals conceded in 15 home isn't purely down to luck man. f***ing hell

not sure what point you think you're making, he stuck to rafa's system in order to keep games tight and as a result we couldn't score for s***

if you think steve bacon is the brains behind that defensive organisation and dubravka playing out of his skin you need help

Might as well just had a f***ing crash test dummy in the dugout then? This f***ing board man.

Well we can have a look at some stats can’t we? This great defensive record has Dubs with the highest number of saves in the league and also we have the 4th highest shots faced per game behind villa, Bournemouth and Norwich lol. Is that sustainable? Could you tell me what positions those three are in the league?

19thb in goals from open play

Shots on target we are 17th

    15th in shots per game

    Counter attack goals 19th

2nd in set piece goals (very sustainable to get all your goal from set plays And defenders)

All these things are telling you where we really should be.

    Through balls per game

    19th

    Short passes

    19th

    Crosses 18th

It’s all here if you want to check it:

    https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/7811/Stages/17590/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2019-2020

Can you tell me the common numbers amongst those stats? They are bottom of the league numbers

I'd be interested to see how this compares to last season.

  12. I dont know what this is or if its relevant but ive been sent a PDF file with 34 pages that is apparently on the Saudi government website. Here's a few screenshots

    snip

    That’s their denial.

Then they say even though they deny it there is no jurisdiction as it is a geopolitical dispute being framed as a trade dispute

This is how the Empire begins...

Palpatine should've sponsored a podracing team instead of building the death star.

  13. Thing is, if you televise every single game and make it that cheap, then attendances across the country are likely to plummet.

I don’t know if this is true. Televised matches and live matches are complements rather than competition, it seems to me.

Absolutely. I have always found this line of logic baffling. Make the game day experience an actual experience (and affordable) and people will show up.

A lot of sports haven't caught up to this part yet though.

  14. In fairness to the PL, the piracy issue is complex and hugely controversial. No other takeover bid under the current regulations have had these kind of strings attached.

Personally feel the length of time that's passed suggests there was negotiation and dialogue between the parties, which is encouraging, as opposed to them flat out rejecting it.

Is it that complex though?  The D&OT is in regards to the named directors and PIF, and the checks are against them.  Now they are checking for criminal links or convictions.  So the tests are.

    1) Due the consortium have the funds for the purchase and funding of Newcastle for the next few years...  Well that is a no brainer.

    2) Do the D&O's have any criminal links or convictions?  Right, this is not about hearsay, accusations by X, complaints of human rights abuse by Y.  Do they or don't they have criminal links or convictions?

    3) Have the D&O's made any false claims in the proposal to the premier league.  Again if 2 is clear then 3 should be as well.

It shouldn't  be that difficult to run a background check on D&Os.  I don't see why its taking 7 weeks plus and also why the media seem to think the premier league is open to accommodating hearsay and accusations.  If there are no convictions then there is no case to answer and the rest is noise until someone brings it to court and one of the D&Os is found guilty!

That’s incorrect you now don’t have to be convinced, the premier league can now use reasonable opinion if Saudi have been involved in piracy

“in the reasonable opinion of the Board, he has engaged in conduct outside the United Kingdom that would constitute an offence of the sort described in Rules F.1.5.2 or F.1.5.3, if such conduct had taken place in the United Kingdom, whether or not such conduct resulted in a Conviction;“

People need to stop thinking the O&D test is a basic do you have money, have you had convictions etc, etc it’s not it’s far more stringent now, and there is a distinct possibility they the PIF will fail this test

    https://resources.premierleague.com/premierleague/document/2020/05/27/e9b03ff0-4f09-443e-b934-64ada14679a5/2019-20-PL-Handbook-270520.pdf

Okay so reasonable opinion of the board, have PIF, not the Saudi Government, been implicated any of these reports from WTO or BeIN?  If they haven't then the answer is the same no case to answer.

Nobody is naive enough to think that the Saudis didn't have a major hand in BeOut piracy (probably) but unless evidence points to PIF or the directors being involved then it surely it can't be held against the takeover.  IMO

The Chairman of PIF is MbS, FFS.

FFS is MBS named in any of the reports then.

The Saudi state is reported to be directly implicated, MbS is the head of the Saudi state.

    Not techincally.

  15. The question I struggle with is: would PIF be interested in buying our club if he wasn’t killed?

You honestly think they are buying a football club in the hope of distracting from one incident? Could be an expensive business if they do that to gloss over every negative article that's published about SA.

Possibly, it’s why I’m asking what people think.

I think it is much more likely that it is a country that is going to be going through massive social and economic changes in the next decade, and so they are focusing on providing entertainment as a distraction (goes with bringing in races, fights, WWE, buying into cruise lines and live nation etc.).  Bread and circuses to keep the people happy.

  16. I think it would be incredibly naive to think that most journalists aren’t given agenda’s or even articles to write, especially in and regarding countries where the freedom of the press is very much questioned.

He was living in the US writing for the Washington Post.  Again, he definitely didn't deserve to be killed, and I'm not saying there is some conspiracy.  The Bein stuff just reminded me about his links to Qatar, that I had completely forgot about.

Also, anyone calling his fiancee a bitch is reprehensible.  She seems to have put out a lot of op-eds and other articles about his murder, not just these letters.

  17. I've yet to see any evidence his fiancee has ever challenged any Saudi purchase previously - and while I'm sure she has - I doubt it's been as relentlessly as this. 3 letters in nigh on 4 weeks. It seems pretty transparent that this isn't just her acting in the memory of her fiancee and that there's another driving force behind this.

If you had to guess, what would you say the driving force is?

Not to go all tin hat, but this reminded me that her fiancee was being fed pro-Qatar narratives for his articles just before he was killed.  Obviously doesn't mean he should've been killed.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/jamal-khashoggis-final-months-an-exile-in-the-long-shadow-of-saudi-arabia/2018/12/21/d6fc68c2-0476-11e9-b6a9-0aa5c2fcc9e4_story.html

"Perhaps most problematic for Khashoggi were his connections to an organization funded by Saudi Arabia’s regional nemesis, Qatar. Text messages between Khashoggi and an executive at Qatar Foundation International show that the executive, Maggie Mitchell Salem, at times shaped the columns he submitted to The Washington Post, proposing topics, drafting material and prodding him to take a harder line against the Saudi government. Khashoggi also appears to have relied on a researcher and translator affiliated with the organization, which promotes Arabic-language education in the United States."

"Khashoggi also appears to have accepted significant help with his columns. Salem, the executive at the Qatar foundation, reviewed his work in advance and in some instances appears to have proposed language, according to a voluminous collection of messages obtained by The Post.

In early August, Salem prodded Khashoggi to write about Saudi Arabia’s alliances “from DC to Jerusalem to rising right wing parties across Europe...bringing an end to the liberal world order that challenges their abuses at home.”

Khashoggi expressed misgivings about such a strident tone, then asked, “So do you have time to write it?”

“I’ll try,” she replied, although she went on to urge him to “try a draft” himself incorporating sentences that she had sent him by text. A column reflecting their discussion appeared in The Post on Aug. 7. Khashoggi appears to have used some of Salem’s suggestions, though it largely tracks ideas that he expressed in their exchange over the encrypted app WhatsApp.

Other texts in the 200-page trove indicate that Salem’s organization paid a researcher who did work for Khashoggi. The foundation is an offshoot of a larger Qatar-based organization. Khashoggi also relied on a translator who worked at times for the Qatari embassy and the foundation."
