Dyer inches

closer to a return

Having suffered no reaction to playing the full 90 minutes of a behind closed doors game against Gretna last week, Kieron Dyer took to the field again on Tuesday, looking to prove his fitness ahead of a first team recall.

And the former England midfielder got another 65 minutes under his belt as our reserve side played out a 2-2 draw with a Darlington XI at Darsley Park.

The visitors took the lead on 15 minutes but with United enjoying the bulk of possession, it came as no surprise when Carl Finnigan teed up his strike partner Andy Carroll for an easy finish just after the half hour.

Dyer appeared to be running freely and popped up in the Quakers box on a number of occasions, seeing two shots blocked by the 'keeper and sending a third effort wide.

James Troisi put Newcastle ahead with just five minutes left on the clock, running into the box and drawing the 'keeper well before slotting home into the unguarded net.

However Darlo weren't finished and levelled the game up in the final minute of normal time.

After leaving the field, Dyer told the official website that he felt fine and hoped to have done enough in front of a watching Glenn Roeder to make the squad for Saturday's Premiership meeting with Charlton.
