Salary cap/ transfer cap are good ideas in theory, but in practice they wouldn't be workable, money and power are the drivers, and the big teams want to keep it that way.

 

A squad size limit (apart from homegrown players - you can play as many of your youngsters) is probably the most realistic option.

 

I like the MLS system, just wouldn't be applicable in Europe.

The idea of a Salary Cap comes up frequently, but is entirely unworkable in the Football landscape.  It works in the NFL because that league because there is no where else for the players to go - so they have to accept the NFL contracts.  If there were another NFL league that didn't have a cap and was close to it in terms of size, prestige and salaries then the NFL would collapse because the players would simply switch leagues

 

That's what we have in FIFA/UEFA.....similar leagues.  Cap the Premier League, and Italy and Spain will take all the top EPL talent. And how to to attempt to implement a single cap businesses in different countries with different economies. A simple salary cap is just unworkable. 

 

Even trying to link it to a percentage of revenue is almost impossible.  First, it favours the big clubs like Manure, Real etc and penalises smaller clubs like Newcastle.  And no way could you trust these clubs to report their revenues honestly when their spending was tied to it. They would all inflate their revenues to increase their allowed spending.  Doomed to fail.

 

The roster limits seem to be the most workable option....put limits on the max number of senior player contracts allowed, allow more young player contracts, and allow only a limited number of the players to be loaned out.  Want to sign a player....you'd better have roster room or you have to release/sell someone. To me this would be the best way to stop the biggest clubs from stockpiling players to their bench.
