Jordan Robertson, a Sheffield United striker, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after his black Mercedes collided with a red Ford Galaxy on the M1 at about 2.50pm on December 25. He was bailed until the New Year.

The driver of the Ford, Omar Mohamed, 38, from Leicester, suffered a broken neck. He was airlifted to Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry, where he later died. He had been travelling to pick up his children from London, where they had been staying for the school holidays.

There is no suggestion that Robertson, 20, had been under the influence of alcohol. It has been reported that he was trying to change songs on his iPod at the time of the crash.

Mr Mohamed, a taxi driver, was a former captain and coach of the Somalia basketball team and took part in the opening parade of the Beijing Olympics earlier this year. He fled to the Netherlands from the war-torn African state 14 years ago and moved to Britain in 2004.

Mr Mohamed's wife Trea, also 38, was at his bedside when he died.

Robertson told The Daily Mail: "My condolences go out to the family. I don't wish to make any further comment."
