Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been questioned by police over an alleged incident outside a nightclub.

 

The England international was interviewed by Greater Manchester Police in relation to an alleged fight outside a nightclub in Manchester on October 15.

 

The 21-year-old star was interviewed by officers investigating claims that a photographer was assaulted outside Panacea in Manchester city centre on October 15.

 

He was interviewed at a police station in Greater Manchester and was questioned under caution but not arrested.

 

"A 21-year-old man was interviewed today at a police station in Greater Manchester," said a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police.

 

"He voluntarily attended and was interviewed in connection with an alleged assault on October 15.

 

"A file is now being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service."

BELLAMY COURT CASE CONTINUES

Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy grabbed a young woman's arm and pushed her against a wall following an altercation with her friend in a nightclub, a court heard on Friday.

 

Holly Smith, who was 18 at the time of the incident, said the Liverpool and Wales forward grabbed her when she challenged him for calling her friend Sophie Palmer fat.

 

She said she later saw Bellamy grab Miss Palmer by her throat.

 

The alleged incident happened in the city's No 10 nightclub on February 4, Cardiff Magistrates' Court heard.

 

Bellamy, 27, of Menai Way, Rumney, Cardiff, denies assaulting the two women.

 

His friend Franklin Lynch, 52, of Glan-Y-Mor, Barry, south Wales, denies assaulting Miss Palmer.

 

Miss Smith told the court that Bellamy pushed past Sophie, not in an aggressive manner, but there was a collision between the two.

 

She said: "Sophie said 'excuse me, don't push past me' or something along those lines.

 

"The male became slightly more aggressive and called her a fat slag and asked who she thought she was. He said 'you shouldn't be pushing past me'.

 

"Following that, Sophie said 'whatever' and carried on walking and the male called her a f****** t***.

 

"The male continued to walk past me and I said 'You shouldn't say things like that, it's not very nice'."

 

Miss Smith said it was at that point Bellamy became aggressive towards her.

 

She said: "He grabbed my arm pushing me against the wall and my body followed."

 

Miss Smith said she then pushed Bellamy away from her.

 

She added that shortly afterwards she heard Sophie make a noise: "I turned around and he had her with his hands around her throat."

 

She said she still did not recognise him as Craig Bellamy at this point, but said he looked familiar.

 

She said the other friend Katherine Williams tried to separate the pair and she went to try and find a bouncer.

 

Miss Smith said that when she returned to the scene, Sophie was not there.

 

She said the next time she saw her friend was inside the entrance to the club and Bellamy's friend Lynch was telling the bouncers to get her out.

 

Bellamy's lawyer John Charles Rees QC suggested to Miss Smith that nothing had occurred between her and Bellamy.

 

He said: "By speaking to him you were likely to provoke another outburst by him weren't you?"

 

Miss Smith replied: "Yes."

 

Mr Charles Rees said to Miss Smith: "You didn't regard yourself as assaulted that night, did you? You didn't complain to police when you rang up on behalf of Sophie?"

 

Miss Smith said: "No. I actually made the point that I didn't want anything."

 

Mr Charles Rees said: "You were as surprised as Mr Bellamy when you found out he had been charged?"

 

Miss Smith replied: "I did try and stop that, it wasn't anything to do with me."

 

Mr Charles Rees said: "Sophie didn't want to press charges, did she?"

 

Miss Smith replied: "No".

 

Mr Charles Rees asked her if Miss Palmer had just been upset that the door staff were not throwing a celebrity out of the club.

 

Miss Smith replied: "I suppose, in a way."

 

Louis Borge, a health and safety officer at the club at the time, told the court that a woman he now knew to be Sophie Palmer came up to him that night and said she had been grabbed around the throat.

 

He said she took him through to the VIP area and, as she raised her hand to point out who had done it, Lynch grabbed her arm.

 

He said: "All I remember him saying is 'Listen'. She was screaming 'Get off me'.

 

"He got his arms around her - it was like a bear hug - to keep her stable. He was trying to get her out of the doorway."

 

He said he was not able to intervene, as he did not have his doorman's licence at the time.
