The subs thing is easy to understand. 
 

 

Howe is only responds to goals - otherwise he’s making the subs he decided to make prior to the games. It’s not 100% but there’s truth in that. 
 

We can be 2–1 up but it’s getting backs to the wall.  A fullback can be getting rinsed again and again.  Howe is not responding unless it’s time for the subs he decided on earlier or we concede. 
 

 

In his defence - he has always done this. Always.  When we were good we would find a way to score another goal or we just ride out the wave. He’s fine to see us backs to the wall and watch it unfurl, rarely will he make a sub that doesn’t seem pre planned unless game state changes. 
 

 

I remember a 2-2 vs Wolves in the 7th season. 1-2 up, fullbacks were getting rinsed we had Tino and Hall sitting on the bench. No subs until we conceded.  
 

 

When we see out the pressure it doesn’t matter much.  But when we capitulate 7-10 times a season people will be looking at his decisions closer. 
 

It doesn’t bother me much anymore - I’ve seen it work plenty of times.  But there’s something to the claim.

When we can’t sustain attacks or score  for a long time he wasn’t ever playing 2-uptop, not playing a withdrawn striker or someone in the 10. Sticking to similar tactics and setup etc.
