He had a similar kind of status when he was at Liverpool, was probably their best player along with Fowler, and was widely regarded as one of the top midfielders in the Premiership, if not Europe. He moved to Real at the peak of his career and became Britain's most successful ever export - 2 CL medals, a couple of league titles, and god knows how many other cups - and he was an important member of that team for the most part. A dismal spell at Man City shouldn't take the gloss of what was a wonderful career...but how many people would describe him as a true great or legend? He is right footed yes right footed, he had a free role at liverpool, england stuck him on the left wing most of the time, over 10 years on and england are still looking to fic that left wing problem. He's carried Liverpool on many occasions. Aside from that CL campaign, that last ditch piledriver against W Ham in the Cup Final was particularly memorable.
