keegan is (or rather was before he lost his passion, which is another good reason) a tracksuit guy. A DOF is an executive position, to provide long term planning and vision, and oversee ALL football development (like the RESERVES!), over and above the manager, which is what SJH/FS fulfilled for him, and I don't see any sign of that ability in any of his other past jobs either. But if you insist that he knows how to pick a player and sell the club to him and him to Mort, in light of recent comments by Fat Sam about a left back, how do you think a player like Beresford would have gone down with Allardyce?

 

 

 

Keegan wasn't just a tracksuit guy as you put it, he helped shape Newcastle United off the pitch as much as Sir John Hall or anyone, indeed most of the implementations came from KK himself and he was very much at the time like a DOF who basically took care of everything, hence why he struggled in other jobs where he wasn't fully in control or 100% hands on. His SoccerCircus is proof positive that KK is more than capable outside of the tracksuit.

 

I agree with Gemmill, if done properly it could be a great thing for the club, however I couldn't see Big Sam going for it and to be honest, I wouldn't blame him because any bad period and the idiots will start chanting for KK, no-one wants to work in the shadow of someone like KK who is arguably bigger than the club, or was in his two spells here as player and then manager. If we are to go with a DOF then Big Sam himself has to choose who he wants, after all he has to work with the man.

Keegan wasn't just the coach or manager at the time, he scouted players himself, he negotiated with new signings and their agents, all the PR went through him first and he also wined and dined business people. At Fulham he was technically a Director of Football, responsible for their youth system, their coaching and managerial set-up, transfers, wages, all that kind of stuff.

 

As for some of his implementations, the public access to training was his idea, or rather he voted for it to stay, the abolishment of the reserves, the wage structure, the refurbishment of dressing rooms and dugout area, he had a hand in all that, off the pitch he traveled all over with club executives looking at various methods in place at other clubs. He had a hand in the Sporting Club plans and the expansion of SJP too.

 

There are some good books out there Vic on that era, you should read some, they are quite revealing. When it was decided we were going to float, KK was against it from the offset because he'd then lose most of the control he had over the club and would be as you put it, the tracksuit guy. He was even reluctant for the club to create a PR department as he wanted full control of that too. The guy was so immersed into NUFC it took over him, he was a control freak and probably still is. Great manager for us though and one of football's genuine good guys in the same way Sir Bobby is.

so out of all that (some of which I don't believe he was the major principal or the final authorty tbh), which bits would he be doing that aren't covered by Mort/Allardyce or one of the 'specialists' we now have? Funny though how Keegan single handedly scouted the players, yet Glenn Roeder/Shepherd was crucified (most likely by yourself) for not having a scout at every two bit club on the planet. Also, do you honestly think Keegan was a good businessman in some of the contracts he supposedly negotiated? Like I said, Sam wanting a defensive full back for nowt, and Keegan signing a flying wing back for a club record just doesn't gel to me.
