That photo hurt my eyes.

Two away wins all season, wasn't it? Still managed good draws at Man Utd and Liverpool. Weird season.
The UEFA Cup run was a good distraction and gave us some nice memories like:

But then even that fell flat.

Annoyingly Liverpool have got three consecutive good results in spite of him or his cameos.
Good job he didn't score that header at the weekend.
-
This the same Shearer who scored 28 goals that season? Bore off, man.
There's no doubting the end of that season was when he started to fade, but that game was in January and he had 16 league goals at that point.
03/04 was just one of the most frustrating seasons I can remember. Constantly one step forward, one step back.
-
I wish he'd just shut up. He sounds like a jilted ex.
Certainly. And so does Barton.

Why was Carroll even taking a pen?!
Confidence thing... give him an easy goal...
How could it possibly have backfired?!

Some of the comments in that thread are quite amazing.

Alan Shearer says he is still numb and in shock over the sudden death of his friend and former Newcastle United team-mate Gary Speed.
In an emotional interview on BBC Radio 5 live Shearer said: "This just doesn't happen to one of your best mates.
"I was with him on Saturday afternoon arranging next weekend. He was coming up with his wife to stay at my house.
"I left the studio, shook his hand and said 'see you next weekend'. Unfortunately I won't.
"[On Saturday] he was happy, joking, we were having the normal mickey taking that we do out of each other and having a laugh and joke about golf trips and holidays that we went on together last year.
[...]
Edit: They've added the the audio interview.

That article has a great compendium of photos and videos. Just a shame about the
to grieve in piece.” -
Owen and Shearer on at the same time will be quite something
-
Something just isn't right like.
It really is baffling. All testimonies coming in are that he was bantering and cheerful just the day before. Would be one thing if he was just putting up a brave face, but apparently he was actively reaching out and interacting with people.
-
Pretty common for Rooney certainly.
and the second is momemtum and Colo is too quick. This is what they went with on MotD but I think it's also an exaggeration. Yes, it goes relatively quickly but definitely not too quickly for Rooney to realise the ball was gone and slow his momentum. No need to lash in again a second time which is why it should have been a yellow, imo.

Exactly. You can shear a sheep many times but only skin it once etc etc...

Too much to have all players wearing a commemorative 11 SPEED on their shirts for the day? FIFA would probably not allow it anyway.
More acceptable would probably be players having their usual squad numbers but all with the name Speed. Not a huge fan of that idea though
-
It would be good to leave coloured placards on seats that when held up form '11 SPEED' across a black and white background.
Was about to say that. Some colourful 'tifo' would be great.

Sends cold chills down your spine hearing Owen talk about NUFC.
-
i remember the unsavoury songs everton used to sing about him (speed) in his time here.
Yeah read that a few times today, I guess it's been water under the bridge. I have an Everton supporting mate, saw him this morning and he was gutted when we heard the news.
-
definitely think the club should seek dispensation from the PL to give Lovenkrands a new shirt number and retire the number 11 shirt.
Never agreed with retiring numbers and in this situation I'm still against it. Rather have someone come in and know the 11 shirt was worn by a great man and it needs to be filled, give someone the chance to make it their own, add to the shirts legacy.
Very well put.
-
Gary Speed is an adopted White, Toffee, Geordie...
Owen is the anti-Speed. No one wants to call him their own.
-
Great to see all these names from his time at NUFC pop up. Viana the latest... what a great gesture.
-
Probably don't even need a manager. Such a great squad of top pros and quality in depth.
-
What is going on with Lucas... Thought he was supposed to be a donkey. Overachieving à la Raylor?
-
Phew.

Well what we can take from that is even during such a frustrating season he remained the reliable professional he always was.
(... except for that penalty he gave away at home to Birmingham
)
